Serving size for their food is pretty small. Their “famous” cheese toast is laughably small (and yes you can add $13? To make it a full toast. Ridiculous. By the way the cheese toast tasted way better at their other outlet in the west.
Penne ragu lacked salt, and serving size was also, you guessed it! Small.
So, if you’re into serious caloric control, or only feeding kids then yeah it’s fine.
The PBJ toast was excellent though; and no BS (add $$$) for a full size toast.
There’s a reason why the ratings are what it is; perhaps the management needs to rethink their serving size.
10% service charge for relatively inattentive wait staff is also something they could work on. After all, orders are placed through your phone via the QR code; so they’re only delivering orders and topping up water. Not much task saturation; so we have no idea why we (and other tables) had to regularly ask for water top ups.
It’s an aesthetically pleasing cafe no doubt; lots of younger folks with laptops and americanos working/studying away.
If you’re here for a standard size decent meal then you may be disappointed.
Would I come back? Yeah maybe for the PBJ toast; take...
Read moreBeautiful cafe space with both gorgeous indoor and outdoor dining. There is even a small space for kids to play. The outdoor dining gives the feels of hanging out in a landed property.
The coffee and cupcake is as expected since it’s a chain. I had the peanut butter cupcake which is a tad on the sweet side though it’s very moist and delicious.
Aug 2022 Back at Plain Vanilla again. Finally managed to try their breakfast - had the toast with jam and a side of eggs. I was shocked that they slather a thick side of jam on the bread and managed to change to just plain toast with jam on the side. Eggs are decent and worth it as a side. I thought the rest of the breakfast looked a little too expensive. The oat cappuccino was good. Also tried the salted caramel cupcake this time - not as sweet as the rest so this is probably one of the ones to go for.
Nov 2022 This has become one of my to go cafes in East Coast. This time I had the scrambled egg with avocado on toast together with an oat flat white. The coffee is one of the cheaper ones in the hood (though in a smaller cup). The egg and avocado came nice and thick and was delicious and hearty as a...
Read moreWent over to Plain Vanilla to get desserts after brunch in the area. While the establishment scores high on the decor, unfortunately everything else was lacklustre for our visit.
There were different groups hanging out at the front of the store, a mix of people waiting to place their orders, as well as others checking out the availability of the bakes. There was no crowd management, which made for a confusing experience.
While placing our order, the cashier proceed to pack the receipts and we were left waiting at the counter for a while before she informed us to wait to place our order. When the same staff served our order, she proceed to place the plates and utensils in a rough manner, resulting in one of the spoons for the coffee to fall from the saucer even before the coffee was placed on the table.
To round off the experience, the apple galette and lemon tart were unmemorable and a waste of calories. It is unfortunate that the establishment is pitching itself at a level which does not deliver on the fronts that matter - service and food. Would recommend to take our business to the other cafes in...
