Shop name : Abang by Pondok Abang at Sprouts Food Place, Botanic Gardens:

The Dish

What you see is a vibrant plate of spicy fried rice, crispy fried chicken, a side of sambal, some keropok (crackers), and a wedge of calamansi for that extra zing.

The Fried Rice

It looks fiery, and it delivers on that spice. The grains are well-separated, infused with a robust sambal kick. The bits of greens add freshness, keeping it from being one-dimensional.

The Crispy Chicken

Golden-brown, crispy, and juicy—this is not your basic fried chicken. The batter has that light crunch, while the inside remains succulent. The calamansi wedge is a genius touch, cutting through the richness with a bright citrus note.

The Sambal

Oh, the sambal! This is where the heat intensifies. It is that rich, slightly smoky, slow-burning kind of spicy that lingers, making you go for another bite despite the heat. Definitely not for the weak-hearted, but absolutely addictive.

The Keropok

A nice crunchy addition, though more of a textural bonus rather than a game-changer.

Final Verdict

This dish is a solid 9/10. It has authentic flavours, a great balance of textures, and a strong spicy kick that fans of Indonesian and Malay cuisine will appreciate. The sambal is powerful, the fried rice is fragrant, and the crispy chicken is expertly done. The only thing that could make it better? Maybe a bigger piece of chicken or an extra portion of sambal for those who like it...

I was here today with a friend for lunch. We arrived shortly before 11am on a Monday (3 November 2025) and there was already a crowd at this (I must say) popular food court. And it's not surprising as its air-conditioned (and there's also an alfresco section) and nestled in the Singapore Botanic Gardens with a lovely outdoor v iew. There are five stalls here, and all of them have a steady stream of customers - especially, the Drinks stall, the Noodles stall and the Malay food stall. My friend and I chose the Noodles stall and we were happy with our choice. We were also - actually, more than - happy with the Drinks stall for its very reasonably priced drinks and because of the very nice lady in charge of the stall. And while my friend and I will surely visit this food court again in the near future, we will make it a point to come even earlier as the place can get very very crowded during peak lunch hour.

UPDATE OF 4 NOVEMBER 2025 I've tried to add two stalls at Sprouts Food Place separately - the Noodles stall and the Drinks stall - on Google Maps but they were not accepted, so I've added more photos of the food and beverages from these two stalls, with caption.

A special mention about the Drinks stall here. The lady in charge of the stall is a very nice person. She was very friendly, patient in order taking, and very courteous. I was "blown away" by her excellent customer service - something that is all so very rare these...

Was there for coffee & dinner today. Sprouts Food Place was quite way out, rather difficult to get there as there was no sign leading to the food court. However now I know, walk towards Raffles Building. From Botanic Garden MRT station, it takes about 17 to 20 minutes to reach the food court. It is about 1.2 km from the Botanic Garden MRT station.

Coffee has its quality and at $0.80 per cup, it is value for money. I know of no other coffee places in Singapore that sell a cup of coffee C at this price. It has a well-balanced acidity, bitterness, sweetness and a nice aroma when you sip it. It is indeed a well brewed local coffee and that’s why I like it.

We tried the Malay Local store which serves large portions of food at reasonable prices. Mee Robus and Lontong were very good. Fried Tofu with nuts was alright. Only the nuts gravy tasted weird. The nuts were not crispy. My friend and I enjoyed our dinner. The views from the food court are soothing and full of greeneries, we love this place for meals. The only hindrance is the distance. Would be wonderful if there is a shuttle service from the Botanic Garden MRT station. May return next time for meals if we are in the mood for a long walk to the place. If there is a shuttle service, we will be...
