My lunch kakis and I were in the Depot Road area looking for a place to have lunch. We were at the Yue Hua Food Court at around 1:15 pm and it seemed rather quiet. I vaguely remember lunching at this food court years ago, and it was bustling. What happened?
Was in the mood for wanton horfun and decided to give Wong Kee a try. The signboard is in Chinese, and the only English words there are "From Food Haven". It didn't mean anything to me as I am unfamiliar with Food Haven.
Anyway, I guess I am lucky once again to have stumbled on a stall that I am happy to rate 5 stars. Their char siew wanton horfun was deliciously good!
The horfun was the slim and smooth/slippery version. A bit like ipoh horfun but slightly less smooth. Their char siew was tender, juicy and meaty. There was no caramalisation nor fat, so I would say this is very healthy char siew.
What makes this stall stand above many others is the very generous amount of vegetable (chye sim) given. Many stalls just give you a token leaf or measely stalk and call that a portion of vegetables. This one is clearly super generous (photos) and the vegetables are fresh, glistening and heavenly (if you are a vege lover)!
On top of that, you get 4 relatively large and meaty wantons in a bowl of soup for just $5! It's well worth it!
I felt greedy and added a bowl of wanton soup (with 11 wantons and a generous portion of vegetable) for another $5.
Seeing that I had so many wantons, my lunch kakis begged me to share some of my wantons with them. I gave them a piece each. There is a limit to my generosity when it comes to mouth-watering wantons.
My lunch kakis said the wantons were good! One lunch kaki who ate their Beef Brisket Spinach Noodle ($7.50) was also very impressed with the dish.

The noodles were well cooked and perfectly 'springy'.
Char Siew was flavourful and not dry (commonly found in other Wantan noodle shops using leaner cuts)...so that was great as the lean cuts are a personal preference.
The sauce was superb...not too sweet and chock full of umami deliciousness.
But for me, the 2 let downs were the Dumpling soup and fried pork lard.
Though generous in size and filling, with water chestnuts and black fungus, they were just bland. To me, I couldn't detect any seasoning in the dumpling or the broth.
The fried pork lard was also generous in size and portion but they were just saturated and overly 'gamey' for me.
Go early on weekdays otherwise be prepared to queue for long and have difficulty finding a table as the office crowd breaks for lunch.
That being said, will definitely go back if in the area for a plate of Char Siew Noodles without lard...
Read moreWong Kee (黄記) Wanton Noodle is one of my go to Wanton Mee. It has shifted from Depot Road to 161 Bukit Merah Central Coffeeshop. This stall offers a variety of noodles like Wanton, Dumpling (水饺), Beef Brisket, Shredded Chicken and Chicken feet. Firstly, the noodle is QQ and smooth. The pork lards are fresh and crunchy. The Wanton and Dumplings are mouth filled with ingredients. Though it is a Wanton Mee stall, it's beef brisket is tasty and soft. And I am also a fan of it's chicken feet. Lastly, I like the vegetables which are fresh and...
