Wang Thai Friday 02/12 Worst Experiance ever
We arrivied (a group of 9) at the restaurant and after waiting a good couple of minutes probably about 10min in, the waiter came to introduce himself and took our drinks order. The drinks took forever to arrive at the table. We pre-ordered starters on the Tuesday when the reservation was made and so this was the only dish of the night that was on time.
Our waiter was very sweet and apologised all the way trying to keep us happy and doing his best to get our drinks from the bar. At one stage he was behind the bar himself washing glasses and getting them ready for our drinks.
Eventually the mains started to arrive after what felt like hours (probably 45-50min later). One of our guests were served her dish about 8 min before the rest of the dishes arrived. Further to this we didn’t get a garlic rice as ordered and were only advised that they were out once the food arrived and it was swopped out for egg fried rice, without asking or advising the guest. Two steaks were ordered and one was served way after all the other food arrived as the kitchen only made one. After about 10 min in we asked regarding the duck dish for one of our guests and was told that there was a mistake in the kitchen and only two ducks were made instead of three. After we all finished our meals and one of the guests shared their meal with the lady who was still waiting, the duck dish finally arrived. We asked for a takeaway box immediately as the lady was certainly not hungry anymore and so angry that she couldn’t even eat.
At this time the waiter yet again apologised. As a group that works in the service industry we told him it was in no way his fault and that clearly the whole place was mismanaged. I told him that he should really not be the one to take the blame and that where issues occur the manager should step in and facilitate. Two minutes later the manageress arrived ready with excuses and clearly not ready to understand our frustrations.
She told us that we won’t be able to order dessert because by this time the kitchen had closed (we could see kitchen staff at the bar.) I politely pointed in the direction of the bar and asked her if it is her kitchen staff at the bar having drinks on which she replied ‘Yes, they have been working hard so I let them off to enjoy a drink before going home.’ This happening while customers are still in the restaurant and some of us still waiting for orders placed!!
During the time we were waiting on orders and drinks, the manager didn’t once visit our table to apologise or intervine with us waiting more than 45min for our drinks and meals.
The food that did arrive to the table was decent and the waiter made effort. The manageress was seemingly passive aggressive and generally rude took the shine off the evening and we as a group will never be back or recommend this place to any of our...
Read moreMy wife and I decided to try a place that we hadn't eaten at yet. Because of our love for spicy foods (one of our favourite restaurants on the planet is a curry place on Kloof Neck in the City), we settled on Wang Thai. We arrived at 6.15pm, month end, expecting crowds. I was still pleasantly quiet and less than 50% full. That would change within an hour! Greeted by a very friendly waiter, we were led to a nice table in the main area, next to the glass. Happy to have been seated at a 4 seater table - plenty of space. Our waiter arrived within minutes and he introduced himself and took our drinks order. Drinks arrived within the next few minutes; a good start to the evening! After 10 to 15 minutes, our mains order was taken as we shared some friendly banter with the waiter about the pronunciation of the food item "roti". Should it be pronounced "rawti" as the Durbanites do, or "rooti" as the Capetonians. With much laughter, we decided to adopt the phrase "when in Rome...." and ordered "rootie" and steamed basmati to go with our Thai curries; mine hot, my wife's mild. Food arrived smartly within 20 minutes and first impression was yummy. However, my dish was rather sweet and by the time I was halfway through it got too much. Very sweet! My wife said that hers was ok, but not anything to write home about (I ate her leftover gravy with rice at the end and agreed with her on the flavour point). The rotis were ok, but fairly average. Rice was a little too sticky for my liking. Overall, unfortunately I could not find anything to give a 5 star on the food. As we waited for the food to be served, the restaurant filled up nicely and was really buzzing within 45 minutes of our arrival. Really vibey atmosphere. After mains, the waiter arrived to check if we wanted desert, which we declined, quickly returned with our bill, settled, departed. All in all a nice evening. Wish that I could have...
Read moreThe view was stunning and the ambiance was nice. I didn’t miss music but my friend did. She felt uncomfortable as she could hear conversation. The staff was friendly and on the ball. I had the salmon Roses, R80 for 3 The salmon was not thin as I requested, the salmon rose was not tight or neat or cut uniformly. She had 4 crumbed prawns. They come out a box anyway and are always nice. Nothing to elevate them. For me The taste of the salmon roses just like every other take away Salmon rose. We had the Thai 🇹🇭 beer and I had a jug of Saki. Nice, like I remembered. I had the lamb Massaman curry and plain rice. Don’t know why they asked how I wanted the lamb as those tiny pieces couldn’t have been cooked medium. Literally 1/2 cm They were still strung together. Could have been any meat. That was very disappointing . Not worth R205. Couple of rough chopped potatoes. It was fragrant and hot and nice. The amount of sauce and the bowl given wasn’t worth the price. No pickle, nothing on the side. Large pieces of onion, Al dente. Could have put carrot and onion and chilli in or any other veg. The watery sauce was more than the food. My partner had sliced chicken in a sweet soy sauce. It seemed nice enough but no veg, found some slivers of sweet potato hidden under. Just chicken with pickle on the side. We shared the rice. She didn’t finish the sesame chicken. It was nice. Just nice. She had the pastry with chocolate and nuts. Didn’t taste like pastry, tasted like spring rolls. The triangles were so small it was rather funny. No presentation. Tasted ok but the “pastry” didn’t suit. 4 mouthfuls, that’s what you got. The chef better pull his finger out in my estimation. There is a lot of work to do. I don’t know if we will be back. Nice...
