Bamboo Restaurant — A Perfect Evening with a Let-Down
I reserved a table at Bamboo for my sister's birthday and specifically asked if they could do something special for the occasion. They assured me they would dress up the table, but unfortunately, nothing was done — no decorations or any of the thoughtful touches I had hoped for.
We were seated outside, which was beautiful. The gas heaters created a cozy warmth against the chilly air, and the background music set a lovely ambiance. However, the citronella candles, while charming, were quite overpowering — especially for someone with asthma.
The service was excellent. Our waiter was incredibly friendly and helpful. The cocktails are a must-try, beautifully presented with gorgeous garnishes.
We started with the mussels, which I believe are the best in Hermanus — but instead, I was served crumbed mushrooms with a creamy tartar sauce that was overpowered by gherkins. When I told the waiter it wasn’t what I had ordered, they apologized sincerely and offered to bring the mussels instead. I felt bad and said it was okay, so I kept the dish — but I should have sent it back. Unfortunately, it just tasted oily.
My sister had the jalapeño poppers, which were perfectly crisp and filled with fresh ricotta, paired beautifully with a sweet chili sauce. She also had the Mexican pizza, which was full of fresh ingredients and tasted as good as it looked.
I ordered the Cape salmon. I had to ask for extra lemon, but even that couldn’t mask the oily taste. It came with the same overpowering tartar sauce. On the positive side, the coleslaw was fresh and had a lovely citrus vinaigrette, and the golden-brown chips were cooked to perfection.
For dessert, we shared a slice of cheesecake — rich, creamy, and velvety, with a fresh strawberry coulis that had a bit of sparkle in it. It was the perfect ending — almost. I had asked for a "Happy Birthday" message on the dessert, but that too was missed.
Overall, my sister left very happy, which was the most important thing. I, however, felt a little let down, especially from a restaurant that’s considered a must-visit in town. I’ll definitely return — but next time, when it’s a bit quieter, and with more realistic...
Read moreMy daughter wanted to go to Bamboo with her friends for her 14th birthday. I phoned a day before, and they were so accommodating, offering to push tables together and everything. We can just show up! And wow, how amazing was this experience! The super friendly waiter ( unfortunately I did not get her name) welcomed us and also brought my daughter flowers for the table. I didn't stay, only came later to settle the bill. Once I got home, my daugher told me that the owner was so kind as to offer her a desert, beautifully decorated with "Happy Birthday" on her special day!!! How amazing is that? This totally made her day!
This is why our little town is so amazing, and why restaurants like Bamboo Beach truly are hidden gems!! Visit them, become a regular even if you are not from here!! It is...
Read moreI recently visited Bamboo Beach Restaurant and it was an EXTREMELY disappointing experience. All the food arrived cold, which was unacceptable. The line-fish of the day (frozen) and calamari were particularly horrible - cold. The pizzas were a major letdown as well; the promised pulled-lamb topping was almost NONEXISTENT, the cheese cold an unmelted, topped with a few half cut baby-tomatoes. The tzatziki sides were a poor attempt of the classic dish - lacking any authentic flavor. To top it all off, we ordered Dom Pedro's WITH Amarula liqueur (the waitress confirmed they do have stock), but what we received were merely whisked low quality ice cream with a hint of chocolate sauce and NO Amarula at all. I will never recommend or revisit this...
