We recently had a 3 week visit to South Africa during which we very much enjoyed the warm hospitality, excellent food, fabulous wine and the picturesque beauty of the Country. Each establishment we frequented was extremely hospitable and professional exceeding our expectations in every respect and thus every aspect of our whole journey was of the highest quality and totally without fault.
In order to end our journey in the same vain we decided to visit La Petite Ferme based on the very high recommendation of close friends from home whom had previously visited the establishment. We arrived at La Petite Ferme at midday on Thursday 12th May to arrange a cellar tour, wine tasting and lunch. The very helpful receptionist advised us that we had missed the cellar tour as it had began at 11am but she said we should try again as it is very informative and also ‘interactive’. The receptionist kindly made a reservation for the cellar tour for us on Saturday 14th May at 11am after which we would have a wine tasting followed by a lunch booking at a scenic table in the verandah. To facilitate the reservation I gave the receptionist my name: our hotel, and our Room Number. She appeared to have entered these details into the computer and gave me a La Petite Ferme business card.
As Saturday was the last full day of our holiday we were very much looking forward to our visit to La Petite Ferme. We arrived at 10:50am on Saturday for the cellar tour. We were greeted by a different receptionist who said that she could not find our reservation despite my giving her our details and therefore we could not have a cellar tour. Naturally my wife and I were bemused that a reservation made less than 48 hours earlier could be mislaid and asked the receptionist to check once more as it was important to us. With a degree of reluctance she repeated her search but still could not find the reservation and insisted that, as a result of this, we could not have a cellar tour!
Quite separately we were then met by a male staff member who immediately greeted us by my name (giving the impression that he was fully aware of our reservation which apparently the receptionist was unable to find) and he said that the reason for us not being able to have a cellar tour was that the tour guide we unavailable due to sickness.
There was a certain amount of contradiction in the reason(s) offered to us by the staff for us not being able to have the pre-arranged tour. This I found totally unacceptable and very upsetting. Needless to say we did not waste anymore of out time on having lunch at such a disorganized establishment. This disrupted our entire plans for the day.
Given the very high standards of hospitality and professionalism we previously experienced during our holiday through Africa we were extremely dismayed and surprised by the poor service, lack of professionalism and general disrespect we experienced at La Petite Ferme. Needless to say our experience at La Petite Ferme totally ruined the last day of what had been a perfect holiday.
I wrote (TWICE) to La Petite Ferme in order to elicit some kind of explanation for this desperately poor level of performance and service – I did not receive a reply...
Read moreThis rating is based on the consistent high standards and quality my family and I have received at this restaurant from past visits over the past few years. It is based collectively of all my visits here. This review however, refers to my last visit where the standards we had previously received were not quite met.
We came here for dinner a few days ago (December 2019) for part of my fathers birthday celebration. As usual the views were spectacular and the staff friendly. (I recommend sitting on the grass with a drink before you sit down for your meal.) When we sat down for our meal the waitress was lovely enough to let my father taste the wines before ordering. The waitress however did go back and forth a lot getting each of our drinks individually (not a complaint really, just something to improve on for the restaurant to note) The food was delicious, I had the Venison (cooked to perfection) however, it was promised to come with Dauphinoise , which if you know it, is a creamy layered potato side, often quite substantial. When we recieved the plate, although beautifully presented, it was nowhere to be seen. When we asked the waitress she insisted it was the small pieces of sweet potato. After asking the chef, it turns out the sweet potato was a replacement. This, as you can tell was disappointing for my family and I. I would've appreciated it if the waitresses and waiters had been previously informed by the chef to avoid the hassle. On this particular visit I feel the service was overall a bit lacking.
They also brought my dad a little plate of desserts for his birthday, with a marshmallow, brownie and lemon Turkish delight. A lovely gesture. It would've been slightly more convenient if brought before we ordered dessert, because it was quite difficult to finish everything, but I'm just nitpicking.
Its important to note if you're a picky eater or have specific dietary requirements, that you check the menu beforehand because, although delicious, the selection of menu items is limited, and when we visited with my brother, who prefers not to eat red meat, he was left with the vegetarian option, which was still good, but he would've preferred a chicken dish.
Overall though, a lovely place for a celebrarory meal (as is on the more expensive side) with lovely views, good wine selection and...
