Is this one of the best restaurant in the world? I'll say yes! (Specially considering Price vs. quality this place is amazing.)
At least it is the best in traditional catalan homemade food you can get, and at a very very nice price.
I will put it down to this: I have been in Alquimist, Noma, Kiin Kiin, Geranium, Trio, Kadeu, The Fat Duck and other world famours Michelin-Star-restaurants. All very exciting experiences. But when it comes to real quality cooking that everybody can pay, Catalunya might be the worlds best restaurant.
I have now tried this place more than twenty times during the last 10 years. And I have never been dissapointed.
The food is very well cooked with a lot of passion and love for good fresh quality ingredients. All ingrediens (except the meet) is home grown and cultivated ecofriendly. For an exampel the Chef told me, that all the tomatoes and potatoes they use in the restaurant, is from the field nearby and they are conserved traditionally with no chemicals - to be used all year long. And this is a thing you can absolutly taste in the food.
If you go here, I can recommed the confit de canard with pears (or dried fruits, depending on the season). And ask for a glas (or bottle) of Cava from the ecològic Mas de la Basserola.
My daughters (2 and 6 years old) says they have newer tried a better pasta-dish than the macarrons they make here (and I sadly have to admit she might be right even that I still think my pastas are awesome).
And by the way: If you plan to go here a weekend, between januar to end of marts, be sure to make a table-reservation as the place is packed with people having the traditional Calçots (some kind of grilled onions with a (romesco-) sauce that deserves a top-review on it's own. I have tried the Calçots a lot of places in the región of Valls and the onions are more or less the same everywhere. But the Romesco in Catalunya is 'abowe the stars'. (had to buy a tupperware to bring som of it home to Denmark).
Review July 2017 I would give 6 if I could. The thing is that we discovered that there is a "secret" special healthy menu, that is not displayed in the restaurant and that you have to reserve prior to your visit. It's very different to the rest of the excellent food served in this place, but still made with the extreme passion and the amazing local grown ingredients - and made by the hand of a very skilled and extremely humble 'world-class-chef'. If this is your first visit to Catalunya or you have not tryed traditional catalán food, go for the normal menu. But if you are into vegan-eco-friendly-food or just want to try out something different than the traditional Catalán food, you have to try this 'over the star'-special menu.
And by the way: amazingly this place is still very fair priced. It's still a restaurant mainly attending locals and Catalán families in the weekends, so don't expect a menu in English or with pictures. If you don't speak catalán or Spanish, the chef can help you or else use the free wifi and let 'Google translate' help you, because you really don't wanna miss the excellent food served here. Maybe that's why the price-setting is still so fair.
We (two adults and two kids) used less that 50€ including 3 courses-menu for all, wine, sparkling water, coffee and...
Read moreWe first tried this place on spec a few years back simply because it was one of the few places open on a Monday late in the year. It turned out to be a good choice.
The restaurant itself has an understated elegance with white linen tablecloths and a traditional interior but with large windows at the front letting in lots of natural light.
On each occasion that we've been there we've gone for the very good value menu del dia but check to see if they're doing escudella soup which might not be on the menu but is delicious and filling. The menu itself includes several hearty dishes that will take the edge off any appetite and finishes with a range of mainly traditional desserts. They often serve Mel i Mato, a local speciality of a type of cottage cheese with honey. A great way to finish an...
