This is a review of their breakfasts, both meat and vegetarian. We had recently been watching videos on youtube showing breakfasts in Spain, we saw some establishments in Benidorm were charging €2.50 for a small breakfast. We had not seen those low prices in this area. So we were surprised to see a video review on youtube showing Hotel Algorfa were also charging so little. So we decided we would head out the next morning to try it out.
Right off the bat, we can say we were highly impressed. We had read some reviews on here and a couple mentioned cold food, slow service and so on. It slightly put us off, but we thought we would take a chance as its close to us and we drive past the hotel frequently and often thought about checking to see if they sold breakfasts to non-residents. It has a great location up on the hill overlooking the Vega Baja and the mountains at Orihuela, so it has an extended and beautiful sunset every night.
We arrived around 11:30am, the winter sun had come around the corner and was beautifully warm.
We were provided with a full menu and I have taken photos of each page. It did not have a price list for any non-alcoholic drinks such as coffee, soft drinks, tea, fruit juices. So that might be something to consider adding.
Coffee arrived and we were delighted to find it was good quality freshly ground coffee. An earlier review we had read suggested instant coffee, something that we would never expect in Spain, and thankfully we can report that the coffee was really enjoyable. It came with a tasty Speculoos biscuit, it's in essence a copycat version of a Biscoff. It also had brown sugar, which was a great surprise. Small details!
There are various offers for breakfast, I will not bore you with the details, you can see them on the menu photographs. Any additional items are only 50c. I ordered breakfast option 2, and my partner ordered the vegetarian breakfast.
Brown & Tomato Sauce, Salad Cream, Tartare Sauce, French Mustard, Salt, Pepper, Sugar are just some of the accompaniments provided.
Breakfast was served in about 20 minutes. It looked appetising on the plate, and it all tasted way better than we could have expected. Honestly, it was quite a surprise after our slight concerns from reviews we had read from previous customers. We are aware that the ownership was changed approximately a year ago, so perhaps it has taken some time to find their feet and improve over time.
We were delighted to see the vegetarian breakfast had a veggie sausage. In many places they do not have that, and instead you get an extra egg, or tomato and beans, or some other choice that's nowhere near as good as having a veggie sausage.
Every item on the plate was decent quality, especially at this price point. Every single item was cooked well. So many times establishments serve barely cooked sausages, or have uncooked fried eggs because they didn't splash the hot fat on top of the yolk, or they cook the egg in a pan with other meat items which covers it in black bits. You can see from the photos, the egg was cooked nicely, the inside of the yolk was soft, not dried up, the egg was clean, the bacon cooked well with nice colouring, the black pudding was soft inside, not the frequently found overcooked dry puck like disaster, the sausage was cooked well and had a good texture. The bread is clearly from the onsite artisan bakery. It is not something that has any place in a breakfast at this price, so it was really appreciated and is just another small detail which gives you a reason to make the trip out to try it yourself.
Food was hot, plates were warmed. Staff polite and friendly, came over to check everything was ok. They had smiles on their faces, a small detail that means so much and lifts the atmosphere.
Would love if they had potato scones. It's just mashed potato mixed with flour and a little salt. Shaped , flattened and fried. That would be so amazing, it's our favourite...
Read morewe stayed at Hotel Algorfa in Algorfa country side it is suppose to be a 3 star hotel now but due to renovations going on and not yet finished it's a borderline 2 star hotel to me which I don't normally do. It was €70+ a night now €90+ a night. A few things we found was cleaning issues and rust and cracks and dirt in alot of places the owner had a crack pot idea of putting a Aviary with parrots and Macaws which kept you up through early morning when the sun came up so no sleep from 6.45 am when they started squawking loudly and NO chance of a siesta. The pool area was hot and the stairs in the pool was coming away from the fittings. Children was playing loudly at times and people were smoking on tables pool side plus ball games and lilos were in the pool which is too small for that. Not a pleasant swim when that happens. Gates to pool was meant to be closed at all times which didn't happen and people were leaving their towels on loungers early morning and over night getting their favourite spot. The rooms were abit filthy not clean outside a team staff member said it's Sahara sands but we had no rain or winds during our stay so they hadn't been cleaned although cracks and rust in places. Food was adequate so we ate out once during our 2 day stay. Wednesday roast is good but roast potatoes and chips were rock hard they couldn't cook them properly and Yorkshire pudding was soft not crispy. We wasn't given a ticket and we had pre booked so by the time we got our meal for our roast dinner on my birthday the gannets were in full force and left me with scrag end of beef not nice although the turkey was ok. I had a free birthday cocktail but it was made with snide (cheap rum not Bicardi) as it was a mojito and not made properly the mint was chopped up finely so it made me choke , I ended up leaving it as it was making me ill. Breakfast was ok but when I asked for butter for a croissant I had it was unspreadable and rock hard also I got jam when I said I didn't want it and it was warm when I asked for it cold alot of staff got things wrong such as wrong beer ordered and one incident on the first day we had a sandwich for lunch no gloves was worn and when making them, there was egg bits and salad stuff on the knife and chopping board and she just scraped it off into the bin and carried on with our sandwiches didn't clean the knife or chopping board serious health issues there!! The shop was expensive too Ice was €2 a bag in the local supermarkets they are under €1 especially in Mercadonas. The last night Karaoke was on and it was loud so we couldn't sit on the balcony or watch TV in peace. This hotel is not for children as there is nothing to do unless your willing to drive quite far. I don't think we will be back although the beds were comfy and the staff was very friendly it was too rough and a bit unclean for us. Just glad to get home to get...
