Delicatessen Merkajamón — Restaurant in Ayamonte

I’ve worked restaurants/hospitality. 9 times out of 10 I think reviews criticizing service are wrong. But I felt hustled here.

I order wine, an order of cheese and an order of jamón. Wine and cheese arrive, jamón doesn’t. No worries, I wait awhile, long after we are done eating wines and cheese and other tables have ordered and been served jamon, and ask for it again. It is brought.

When I ask to pay I am shocked at how expensive my bill is. Unusually, and whay bothers me most here, the waitress brings the credit card machine over with the charge ready to go. I ask to see the bill. She points at the computer which is behind the deli case, several meters away from me, in an area I cannot access. No one could read the bill on computer screen from this distance. I have to ask her repeatedly for a paper copy of it. Very frustrating to be so unwilling to show a customer their bill.

Lo and behold I am Charged twice for the jamón. When I point this out, instead of an apology for the double bill and the lack of jamón service on the first order I am met with arguments from every single member of staff, who insist the second charge is because I had two plates of jamón, only after a prolonged effort on my part do they relent and remove the charge.

We have spent many Christmas vacations in the Algarve and each time we look forward to a visit to this deli. This Christmas will not be an exception and we can't wait.
