I recently visited Skinny Toms in Unawatuna, Sri Lanka, with a large group, and while the culinary experience was delightful, the ambience was nothing short of cozy a disappointing encounter at the payment counter left a bitter aftertaste.
Let's start with the positive aspects. The food at Skinny Toms was simply outstanding. We ordered a variety of dishes, including burgers, poached eggs, eclairs, coffee, kambucha, and a grilled cheese toast. However, the standout was undeniably the breakfast muffin - it was, without a doubt, the best I've ever had. The feedback from the rest of the group echoed my sentiments, with everyone raving about the quality and flavor of their respective dishes with the coffee we ordered being very good.
Unfortunately, the positive culinary experience was marred by an unpleasant incident during the payment process. When settling the bill prior to having the food sent, I encountered an unfriendly employee at the counter. He experienced difficulty with the credit card machine, and rather than seeking assistance, the employee vehemently refused to acknowledge any issues with the machine and He insisted that the fault lay with the card, even though a subsequent attempt at a different establishment down the road proved otherwise. The refusal to address the problem in a professional manner was disheartening. The employee's demeanor bordered on argumentative, creating an unnecessary and uncomfortable situation. The lack of customer service during this episode left a lasting negative impression, overshadowing the otherwise enjoyable visit.
In conclusion, Skinny Toms offers an amazing culinary experience with a diverse and delectable menu. The breakfast muffin, in particular, is a must-try. However, the unfortunate encounter with an uncooperative employee during the payment process has cast a shadow over my overall impression. While the food is commendable, the handling of the payment issue raises doubts about returning to Skinny Toms in the future. It is my hope that the management addresses such instances to ensure a more pleasant experience for...

Read moreBy the time I had reached Unawatuna, I had been travelling almost a month. I was all templed and curried out. As much as I adore Sri Lankan food, I really had an appetite for something western. I also was really deflated having seen a high rise hotel on the beach and thousands of people in such a small area. I’m told 93% of tourists here are Russian.
From the moment you enter this restaurant you immediately feel like you’re in a deli or somewhere in a Covent Garden style establishment. The decor, layout, display, menu, interior design and presentation is so refreshing and inviting. In no time at all I’m served, allocated a table and the whirling of the espresso machine is music to my ears.
No offence to the local coffee but I was craving something more authentic. The menu was quite extensive and I ordered the eggs benedict with bacon. There was seating outside, inside and a courtyard to the rear. The wi fi was great and the music was chilled. The meal was very good. Perfect poached eggs and crispy bacon with hollandaise sauce. Garnished with watercress, tomato and served with wholesome lightly toasted bread rolls. I also ordered a lemon and mint smoothie which was divine. The prices are European prices but it was...
