It’s always fascinating to experience the different ways restaurants handle hospitality—especially when you’re made to feel invisible.
After the staff at the reception had warmly welcomed the couple in front of us (who happened to be white), we expected, perhaps naively, to receive the same courtesy. Instead, we were treated to an extended moment of silence, followed by some intense eye contact—and then absolutely nothing. We stood there, waiting, hoping, trying to catch the attention of the staff. I even politely asked for assistance multiple times, which seemed to be met with the same enthusiasm one might reserve for a tax audit.
Eventually, out of sheer persistence, we managed to interrupt a server—who reluctantly approached the host desk, opened a computer with dramatic slowness, and spent a good five minutes half-heartedly pretending to search before declaring there were no tables available. Such dedication to inefficiency deserves its own Michelin star.
Of course, I wouldn’t dare assume the lack of service had anything to do with our ethnicity. That would be unfair. I’m sure Restaurant J simply prides itself on offering wildly different experiences to each guest—depending entirely on how the stars align.
Needless to say, it’s a memorable place. Just not for the reasons...
Read moreIt was a special night when I invited my sons and their partners to dinner. It is rare that we all are in the same city at the same time.
I will start with the positives. The atmosphere was nice, it was a beautiful evening and sitting so close to the water was truly unique. The food was good, so no complaints there.
What was a bit surprising in an establishment like J, was that once we had ordered starters and mains. It was a strange surprise to us when the staff brought us the mains, before they had served the starters. They looked at us funny when we told them we had ordered starters and wanted them before the mains. They didnt argue with us, and took the mains back to the kitchen. I am just surprised that something like this would happen at J. It was not even very crowded so how they missed out on the starters is very odd.
The next thing that should not happen in an expensive restaurant is that none of the waiters filled up our wine glasses. We had to serve ourselves. Not a huge issue, but in a place like J, I expected better service.
All in all, the food was good, but the experience was very average. I will not...
Read moreReal good food and excellent location, but too big and unpersonal.
We were there for a mid week lunch and surprised by a lot of people. The venue has (apparently) grown quite a bit in the last years and, thus, to accommodate more customers, I suppose, the place looks like several restaurants/bars in one. Especially the entrance area is pretty overloaded, dark and small and the menu actually does reflect this, too: high end sea food with hummer and oyster for 1100 sek per person and hamburgers for 200 sek on the same menu, but no lunch menu either?
The service was not the best. The apparent head of service accompanied us to our table right at the water being a windplastic cover (through the rather vast restaurant) without committing to a friendly chat or positive comments, the waitress we got was friendly but clearly had too many tables so although the food we got was good and fast, it took a long time until the plates were removed.
The culinary ambition the restaurant has suffers from the quantity of customers they...
