We had passed the restaurant walking around Fribourg during the day and after a recommendation from our hotel on where to eat we made our way down the street and were very glad we did. The kind waitresses understood enough of my appalling French to provide us with so the specialties of the house - the fondue Gothard and another dish which I cannot recall the proper name of - Valiasanne, vacherain with ham and tomatoes. The fondue was made witha great local cheese ànd served with small potatoes and bread. We had a side salad with it of fresh green leaves and cherry tomatoes. I now understand why fondue can be a gourmet dish. It is to be recommended. The Valaisanne might be described ineptly as bread with ham and tomatoes under a layer of molten cheese but that is like comparing a fine creme brulee with a custard tart. Along they way the chef has added a magic touch or two. Needless to say it is heartily recommended. After all the fine cheese, we settled on the sorbets for desert. Le colonel with lemon sorbet and vodka was divine and Le valaison with apricot sorbet equally delightful. Service was attentive and prompt. It was well populated and all appeared to behaving a good time like us. If in Fribourg, go to this restaurant - you will not be...
Read moreThe fondue was excellent and the atmosphere is lovely. The server with a brassy blonde Bob made sure there was no nuts in the bread or crackers we were given. My problem was when our server changed to a tall woman with short brown hair. I told our server I had a nut allergy (multiple times in French and she confirmed she understood) she said okay and then did not bother to check with the kitchen if my dessert had nuts, she just told me it didn’t. The dessert DID have nuts and if I hadn’t have noticed this, I could have died because her lack of care and unprofessionalism. This restaurant is NOT SAFE for allergy sufferers. When I told her it had nuts she said no it doesn’t so I showed her the pieces of nuts in the dessert and she made a very weak apology and said she didn’t know that. Seriously not impressed as I could have died and very little care was shown for this outrageous mistake. The tall server with short hair for...
Read moreWoaw, so lucky we had a table there for diner without reservation. The place is packed, the food is just amazing, brasserie type, lots of those very rich, generous countryside dishes. If you don't know it, Fribourg is the capital of gruyère type cheese (the Gruyère village is part of its territory), the fondu with vacherin, is simply superbe, along quality wine by the glass. I am told it is one of the best restaurant in Fribourg, I cannot confirm as I haven't done many others, but I can highly recommend them. Piece of advise, make your reservation ahead....
