Hi serious eaters! Welcome to another Shidoshi review. I post real reviews (verses ”farmed”). Long, short, funny, serious, these are for you so you can make the best informed decisions about what you want to experience.
Let's get to it.
Good food can be difficult to find, let's face it. Great food is even scarcer. A multitude of events must take place for greatness to be achieved.
At this location I found neither good or great. Let's break it down.
Atmosphere and service (attitude);
Right as we walk in we're greeted with frowns, not smiles and there's a complication about reservations. We had called but were told to ”just come in”. On arrival we were told there was a 30 min wait because we didn't have reservations. Immediately I had reservations. (pun on word play). It didn't get better from there. It's cold inside. It's new years eve so it's cold outside. I guess they dont have heat. The interior decor is earthy and dark with stone on wood accent. I put my jacket back on. Only four other people were dining eventually joined by one other couple later on.
Food;
It's the ingredients that matter. Quality begets quality. Magicians cannot make gold from lead. The chefs (polite for cooks) were so concentrated on presentation (poker face?) that flavor was missing in every dish and soup. But, really, it could be a ”bad day” thing, but emotions are highly contagious positive or negative. It effects customer experience and will certainly affect food. I don't demand smiles but something above ”Robot” would be nice. A deep breath now and then can bring back some happiness. The dishes were pretty, but even the sauces were lacking in depth as sauce should add to the flavor not distract from it. Sushi was mostly fresh but again, something is missing in there. It's most likely the quality of product.
Drink;
Sake is sake so...I asked for beer. I was offered Taiwan beer. Nice! I was poured Buckskin. What? I dont care if it's made in Taiwan, the label was not what was offered. Buckskin is overly ”hoppy” and does dont have a clean enough profile to pair with food...any food. Period. I only drank half. Please offer what is on the label! Lastly, the tea was good, standard for the affair, but served at room temp. Hot tea is WAY better. Hot tea is way better. Hot tea is....you get my point.
I had zero expectations coming and left with zero expectations to return. There are lots of highly reviewed Japanese restaurants in this area so choose wisely.
Enjoy!
if you find my reviews helpful...

Fine...
