The food here is really quite delicious and the price point is unbeatable--literally must be the lowest price in all of Taiwan.
Had the xiaolongbao (TWD 40), thick rolled crepe with two eggs (TWD 20), taro cake (TWD 20), and daikon cake (on the house as the very kind boss lady was very concerned I had not had enough to eat, normally TWD 20).
Xiaolongbao was excellent--the shell was not too thick and the interior was juicy and filled with ample pork meat. Surprisingly, it was not--as one might expect given the price point--all fat. The shell is dumpling skin (some places make it with steamed bun shell). Don't think they make them themselves, but they are quite good. Their special chili oil puts the entire business over the top.
The rolled crepe is sizable, quite thick (almost 0.5 cm) and very filling. IT is pan fried so there that fragrant aroma. The special chili oil gives this thing a wow.
The pan fried taro cake is unlike anything I've ever had. I had been expecting something similar to pan fried radish/daikon cake, but it was actually very chewy. Couldn't really taste any chunks of taro but could definitely taste the taro flavor. Some parts were pan fried to the point of crispy so the contrast of chewy with crispy was very nice. Special chili oil is a must!
The pan fried radish/daikon cake is excellent. I didn't expect much because in Taiwan, unlike Hong Kong where all sorts of stuff are added to daikon cakes (such as chopped chinese sausage, shiitake mushrooms, dried oyster, little shrimps, etc etc) , daikon cakes are usually plain without anything added. I think the daikon taste was really brought out because there were no other flavors to interfere. Don't forget the chili oil!
This place is amazing, will be back some time for their braised meat rice (maybe, it looked like it was all fat), dumplings, steamed pork bun, and more rolled crepe and xiaolongbao.
The only downside is that most breakfast foods in Asia--and Taiwan is not exception--are ridiculously calorie dense (the meal above is about 1000 calories!) and I don't enjoy working it all off!
