Library café | ไล-บรา-รี่ คาเฟ่ ปรีดี 26 — Restaurant in Khlong Tan Subdistrict

I had very much looked forward to going to this cafe, which was recommended to me as a great place to hang out. Google Maps chimed in and informed me of my 97% match. I really expected to be spending a lot of time there. They have coffee, library implies quiet and you can work there. What could go wrong? Well, lots.

A lot of it was bad luck really. That the two women sat next to me were very noisy and the furthest I could sit was by the AC which was too cold and loud, although not quite as loud as the music. The establishment only accepts cash. It closes so early, at 7 PM. On top of all the little things like that, what really got to me was all the prepping for closing time that started at about 6:30. This is my biggest pet peeve. If your shop is open for business until 7PM, it means that all aspects of the service should be available until 7PM. I don't want to have to tolerate machines being cleaned or the smell of bleach or other such chemicals on the floor, which is nasty if you're sensitive to strong smells/asthmatic. Why are you stressing me out with all the hints that you're closing, music being turned off, everyone done working sitting around, etc. Nope, nope, nope, nope.

I really wanted to like this place and that it is walking distance away from where I'm staying seemed like a great coincidence. Every time I thought OK, I'm just not having much luck today, I'll come back and give it a try some other time, it just kept getting worse. The final drop was the table. When I got up to leave from the low seat, I knocked my (injured) knees against something sharp under the table that took my breath away. I'm struggling to heal as it is, the doctors and physio is emptying my bank account and now this?! I couldn't believe my eyes when I had a look. Worst design flaw ever. Like who does that?! There was no way to bring this back. Even the lovely staff members couldn't make up for any of it. Pity.

I want to like this place, but...

I live literally steps away, having just leased a house for one year on a quiet side-street off of Soi 24.It's less than a three minute walk. I was excited. Upon walking in, I instantly felt like I was in any small library in the US, right down to the subdued colors and simple, well-worn but comfy chairs...a nice place to look over my trades a few hours before the markets open in the US. I was optimistic!

But no. I order a cappuccino with an extra shot from a less-than welcoming person behind the counter, who then proceeds to charge me 165 THB (about $5.50) for it. "Okay," I thought, "Ill give it a try." I instinctively leave a 20 THB tip (I know it seems low, but it's a lot in Bangkok!) and note that mine is the only tip in the jar. I then said thank you in Thai...not even a nod from any one of the three people behind the counter. I have never felt unwelcome in any cafe or restaurant I have visited in Bangkok. I definitely felt unwelcome at this cafe. I'm just an average white guy, so maybe that's it?...

To make a short story even longer, the end result was a below average cappuccino that did not taste like three shorts of espresso should...it was also too wet. A small cup with three shots should taste very dry. The roast on the beans was also somehow off. Not even a decent latte! (Read: I don't think I received three shots of espresso.)

This business has potential. I want to be a customer. It's so convenient for my morning cappuccino. I need to get out of the house every day and am grateful for a place so close - and where I can take friends when they come to town. After today, I'd rather walk another few minutes to EmQuartier (several good places) or El Mercado (good people there) and get a great cappuccino for less money and a more welcoming ambience!

Very suspicious of all the "local guides" who are giving this...

Back then, I was just another student looking for a quiet café to study. With fewer online resources to rely on, I stumbled upon a peaceful spot behind Emporium—Li-bra-ry Café. It quickly became my go-to place, and even when they opened a branch at Rama 9, I followed. Fast forward to today, hearing that the Sukhumvit branch has relocated to Pridi 26, I knew I had to visit. Walking in, it was like a flashback—all the memories of studying, hanging out, and enjoying the cozy atmosphere came rushing back. The layout might have changed, but the warmth and tranquility remained. The café even has a loft area for those who want a quieter space. The menu is extensive, but my order has always been the same—Li-bra-ry Waffle, an iconic dish in my memory. With its unique shape, crispy exterior, and soft, fragrant interior, it's one of my all-time favorite café desserts. Paired with a hot latte that’s smooth, creamy, and well-balanced, it was just as perfect as I remembered.
