Myself and a friend lived at Bann Kun Pra for six months (October - March)while we taught English at a local school, and we only have positve things to say about the hotel and its staff. ||The charm of the old but well-maintained buildings is apparent as soon as you walk through the front gates. The staff takes care to keep plenty of healthy plants along the sides of all the walkways, and there are often lilies blooming in the large clay and stone pots scattered around. The rooms themselves give an authentic Thai feel; large with smooth old wood floors, and all have a direct view of the legendary Chao Phraya river, as well as the ornate Buddhist temple on the opposite side. ||The restaurant has fantastic ambiance at dusk and into the night, overlooking the river and flanked by large tropical foliage. They cook up a great variety of delicious Thai dishes (try the soft shell crab with garlic, trust me) at a reasonable price. The servers are exceptionally friendly and attentive, and actively work to solve any communication issues. Local Thais often frequent the restaurant to share a fish platter or two, which further underlines the quality of this authentic eatery. ||Finally, Bann Kun Pra is in a good location for someone looking to explore Ayutthaya. The sunset river cruise offered through the guesthouse (300 baht/pax) is well worth it: a small boat picks you up from a set of stairs leading from the restaurant down to the water, and takes you all the way around the 'island', stopping to see some of the better temples in the old capital along the way. We brought a bottle of wine with us and had a great time. There is also a large morning market about 400m down the road, and the bar street 'Soi Farang' is less than a 10 minute walk (if you go, be sure to have a drink or two at Planet Earth bar). And of course, there is a 7/11 nearby for convenience. I could go on about how much I liked living there, but you should really go see for yourself. ||TL;DR - Bann Kun Pra offers a uniquely authentic Thai experience, you should most definitely...
Read moreBannKunPra is an unexpected oasis. It is located barely off a major artery, U Thong Road, but as soon as a visitor enters the gates, the city is left behind. The century-old teak house is charming and thoughtfully appointed, with a large river-viewing terrace off the dining room. Views of the Pa Sak river are spectacular with an active temple complex on the opposite bank, all manner of boat traffic, including sampans and tugboats pulling massive barges, and a lively and vocal array of birdlife.||My husband and I chose to stay in an air-conditioned unit upstairs in the adjacent 2-storey structure. It is a spacious room with lovely, small bathroom and interesting decorator touches, although some wear and peeling paint are curious detractions. The wall facing the river is all windows with a patio door and a large deck. There is continuous traffic noise from the main road behind, and at mid-day from the small restaurant next door, but it does quiet down and the white sound of the excellent air conditioner also deadens the exterior noise. We are pretty sensitive to noise, but found it easy to ignore and took great pleasure in sitting outside during the cooler hours and watching the river, the boats and the birds. ||The restaurant is lovely and the food delicious and very reasonably priced with good variety. Breakfasts were included in the cost of our stay, and the choices were simple but tasty. Dinners on the terrace overlooking the lights on and across the river were absolutely heavenly. The wait staff was universally friendly, helpful and engaging. The owner (?) who checked us in and managed reservations spoke English and was extremely helpful, helping to arrange a two and a half hour boat tour around Ayutthaya that pulled in at the hotel's riverbank to pick us up and dropped us off at the night market (excellent!). ||We enjoyed our room, felt very comfortable at Bann Kun Pra and well taken care of. I felt the price was reasonable (1100 B) considering the spaciousness and privacy of our room, the charming facilities and the excellent...
