Thai style restaurant in Ayutthaya without the chichi pretension of Bangkok cool, design, vintage, and all that you don't need. Also without any tourist mayhem. And without tourist prices. I also tried riversider restos Ban U Thong and ร้านอาหารสายน้ำป้อมเพชร Sai Nam Pom Petch Restaurant, and Pruek Thara beats them hands down in cozy, rustic, yet unobtrusive ambience and perhaps also in taste and quality. And it's better aligned for sunset. Just a typical Thai country restaurant with rambling multi-level wooden furniture right on the river, a caring family looking after you and delicious, healthy food; extra wishes are gracefully accepted, no problem. They do not play any music - excellent! (I mean it, I'm so tired of getting any music forced onto me.) Also no TV. Great for sunset. Not even on a weekend night completely full. They could improve on the bathroom (clean, but old technology) and on providing mosquito repellent (there are not many mosquitoes, yet some Soffitell or other repellent could be...

This is a spot recommended by locals for a nice casual lunch. Fried rice is especially tasty, which goes great with the fresh river prawns when available. We were introduced to river prawns because they are not available in the United States. They are between the size of lobster and big shrimp, and some parts taste more like crab. One river prawn for each person was just right.

We wrapped up the delightful meal with Thai ice cream flavors. Would definitely come again for the fried rice and river prawns.

My Tom Kha Kai, as I know it, is apparently known under a different name in some parts of Thailand, but luckily most of the times they have pictures 😆 it was easily a portion for 2!

The fried rice with chicken & cashew nuts was nice too.

We were the only ones there, with 3 staff members, but that happens a lot in Thailand. They were friendly but a bit bored and on their phones a lot, cause there were no customers. Understandable but not very...
