We recently dined at Sunset Restaurant at Sylvan Koh Chang, and while the food was good, our experience was completely ruined by a dishonest credit card surcharge policy.
Food Review:
✔ Radna Chicken – Delicious, well-prepared. ✔ Crab Cake (Sunset Mixed Platter) – Tasty and well-seasoned. ✖ Satay – Way too sweet for Thai standards.
The Big Problem – Credit Card Surcharge Scam!
When the bill came (550 THB), I was shocked to be told that paying by card incurs a 7% surcharge unless the bill is at least 1,000 THB. Nowhere was this mentioned beforehand – not on the menu, not at the restaurant, and not by the staff.
❌ 7% is an outrageous surcharge – Nowhere in Thailand do you pay this much for card transactions, especially when the bill already includes: ✔ 10% service charge ✔ 7% VAT
🔹 No Thai bank charges businesses 7% for card payments – this is clearly a rip-off tactic.
Final Verdict – Not a 5-Star Attitude!
This is a tourist trap move, and I cannot recommend this restaurant because of such dishonest practices. Be upfront with your customers! I will be reporting this to the Thai Consumer Protection Board and Tourism Authority of Thailand.
⚠ Advice for Future Customers: ✔ Ask about payment policies before ordering. ✔ Avoid paying by card if you don’t want hidden fees. ✔ Many better restaurants in Koh Chang don’t have these issues!

Read moreThe restaurant in the Sylvan resort is ok. We ate here a few times to avoid getting a taxi into town. The prices seem fair for a resort, although the soft drinks and alcohol seem overpriced. The pizza was not great (sauce was not good), but the Thai dishes were good. Service was not up to my expectations for this type of restaurant. There were some communication problems with multiple staff members. They also reserve seats for customers willing to commit to big orders in order to watch events and performances. These were often not at the scheduled time (with no clear reason for the delay). More vegetarian options, clearly marked, would be appreciated. Also, they should not take away the cutlery to match people’s dishes if the dishes are likely to be shared. And sometimes they took away the wrong item even for the dish ordered, leaving people to eat noodles with a knife and fork...
Read moreWe had dinner at this restaurant during our recent stay at Sylvan Koh Chang. Even though it is a beach front restaurant, the view is not available from many of their tables. In fact, at night, the ocean is not visible. Some of the servers don't understand English properly but can call someone else in case of any issues. Vegetarian options are very limited. Drinks are costly when compared to other places.
Restaurant is not air-conditioned. So, it may become uncomfortable if it is hot outside. To reach the restaurant, one has to walk on sand. That could be an issue if you are dressed up for the evening with...
