We've been coming to this lovely old pub from time to time over the years and we have generally enjoyed our visits. Our last venture here was to celebrate the birthday of my mother. We were 10 persons, having booked in advance and we were shown to a long table in the corner of the main room. It was cozy but it didn't lead to our being able to talk easily during the meal to everybody.
Our waitress, a Polish lady was excellent. Very friendly, helpful and prepared to engage in some light hearted banter. Some of us had starters, things like whitebait and prawn cocktail which were OK. For my main course I had the chicken pie with extra gravy. Delicious. The rest of the party seemed to enjoy their food although we wondered whether there had been a change in chef since we had last been here. Somehow, the food was slightly less impressive compared to our previous visits but we couldn't really put our finger on the difference. Mum finished with an ice cream and a candle and the waitress and owner(?) came over and sang Happy Birthday with us which was nice.
All in all we enjoyed our visit in this old,...
Read moreSo disappointed…….for some years now I’ve wanted to visit this pub, as always liked the look of it from the outside. However, upon visiting last weekend, came away so disappointed by the food. Had whitebait for starters, of which was ok, though no garnish or bread & butter. Then went for the pie for main course, and it was so bland, with no flavour or seasoning to either the pastry or the filling. The potatoes were supposed to of been roasted, yet just looked overcooked. Hardly any vegetables, and they plonk a big pot of the flavourless gravy on the plate to fill it out (all four of our dishes required gravy, so why not one big jug, instead). Normally I’d make comment, but not when in the company of friends.
We had three different waitresses serving us, which became confusing, and one of them who appeared to be French or similar, kept suggesting I return later in the week to sample other foods I’d been tempted by (it was as though she was flirting with me in front of my partner).
Overall, not somewhere we’d wish to...
Read moreYou won’t catch COVID 19 here, excellent health and safety precautions! You may catch something from the toilets .(see pictures!). The 13th century pub near Arundel Hasn’t been refurbished since the 1970s and it shows ! The service is excellent the food is unfortunately Remarkably average at its best ! If you want an old fashioned pub with traditional English rubber unimaginative food ! You are home! Hopefully they can use the lock down to refurb and find a new chef ! This place has traditionally been so busy that they didn't notice that it had become an OAP home with alcohol or that the paint is literally peeling off the wall. The dead and queuing fresh from Arundel castle in the summer may continue to stop by but this isn’t winning any catering awards ! Although it is interesting to visit pub museum pieces if only for nostalgia reasons. Next time i want blue nun, steak Diane and black Forrest gateaux I will...
