March 2025 we had two wonderful occasions at the Woolpack. The first was February 14th which was a delightful experience. The entire restaurant was decorated in such a romantic style, with special menus and wonderful greetings from all the staff. The food, the ambiance and comfort were wonderful. The next event was a Mothers Day gathering of all my family from all over the country. We were given the best table next to the bay window which is a beacon of comfort and elegance. Again a special menu board gave some really exotic dishes to choose from. The staff were delightfully attentive and even our dogs (well behaved) were catered for. Everyone was delighted with the event. September 2024 a delightful birthday dinner at this very friendly and popular restaurant. The place was full dispite the torrential rain. A warm and friendly greeting followed by prompt cheerful service signalled a delightful meal in good company and a birthday candle lit cake concluded our celebration. It couldn't have been better. 11th July 2024 Another wonderful evening meal at this delightful restaurant. A warm and friendly greeting from the owner and staff showing us to our booked place. (Essential to book at this very popular venue) Menus and drinks were brought promptly and our choices taken efficiently. The menu has some very interesting additions especially in seafood and a tempting array of starters, sharing dishes; the snack style and burger style are a separate category as a choice for starter or main course. The selection of meats and fish dishes is also supported by vegetarian and vegan options all with excellent allergy advice. There is also a daily options board which features excellent steak dishes. There is a good choice of desserts. The drinks are the usual but a very good selection of wines and other alcoholic drinks from the special bar. The quality of the dishes is very high and presented with skill and flair; we sent our compliments to the chef. The portions are very generous yet the cost is also competitively priced. The experience of the entire venue is warm and comfortable to such an extent that we shall definitely return frequently. Below is my review of our first visit including details of parking and wheelchair access.
We went for a Saint Valentine's dinner only and so cannot comment on the hotel facilities. We had a warm and friendly welcome from very pleasant and efficient staff. The place is under new ownership and the transformation is amazing, it's now bright, cheerful, with well designed decor which is comfortable and inviting. The menu is comprehensive and interesting with European and Oriental inspired dishes presented with flair. There is also a very good soft and alcoholic drinks list for every taste and price range. The staff had made a special effort to decorate the tables with red roses, rose petals and tea lights and there was a special St Valentine's menu and background music. The location at the lower end of the village is easy to access with a good free car park. There is good but narrow access for wheel chair users. The toilet facilities are spotless. I didn't see any allergy information so perhaps this could be more clearly addressed. We had a very delightful and enjoyable evening.
Another fantastic lunch enjoyed on Wednesday 10th April. Members of my family came many miles so I booked a lunch for us here. The welcome was lovely, and drinks were quickly ordered and delivered My guests were amazed by the fantastic menu and chose falafel and couscous with salad and I chose the quiche of the day with salad and hand cut chips all delicious and beautifully served on lovely crockery. The desserts were stunning. The dishes are all cooked that day from fresh ingredients. The service was cheerfully given though the restaurant was very busy. That is a very big indicator of the quality of the place in that I had to book for a lunch on a Wednesday. Most highly recommended, once you have experienced the delicious Woolpack fare, you will be sure to want to do so as often...
Read moreI booked two rooms and an evening meal for four. Staff, apart from one member, were friendly and helpful.||The meal was lovely, and the service was really efficient and friendly, although one of the specials (Parma ham wrapped cod) was too dry and salty.||Our rooms were not ready by the check-in time, and we had to wait for 40 minutes for them to be ready. Even after that, there was still a problem with the toilet in one of the rooms, so people staying there had to wait for a visit from a plumber before they could start enjoying the stay. Things like this do happen. However, when it happens, an apology and a smile would be an expected way to deal with it. Instead, I was told in an annoyed manner that they only had three cleaners and we will just have to wait. I could later understand why the cleaners could not manage: there was a lot of noise and laughter coming through the ceiling of our room, and then the three cleaners emerged . I am glad to know that Woolpack is a good employer, and their staff can take their time chatting while guests are waiting.||I do understand the policy of having the card registered in case of damage, but normally it is done without handing it over to the staff. I asked if I can enter the details myself, but, as unsafe as it felt, I was told the only way we can continue with the check in was to give my card to the same unfriendly member of staff.||The rooms (after the toilet situation has been resolved) were comfortable, although no chocolate was available despite this being part of the room description. We had no bathroom towels either as the laundry service did not deliver them. Again, all this can happen, and the housekeeper was apologetic.||I would still recommend this place for a stay as I choose to believe that normally they run it much...
Read moreStayed for my partners birthday. Pub and hotel is absolutely gorgeous, really aesthetically pleasing and you can tell a lot of work has gone in to its improvement. Unfortunately it’s let down by the staff, lack of communication and atmosphere.||||We had booked a quiet night away (to escape the children!). We weren’t aware there was an Elvis tribute act on which was absolutely fine as we made ourselves scarce for the evening. Unfortunately this carried on until quite late at night and the sound was literally reverberating through the bed. I wish we had of known this would be the case prior to booking. I may be mistaken but there was no mention of this on their website. ||||The room was gorgeous, let down by hard pillows and a hard bed. ||||Food was great but service lacking, breakfast took 45 mins to come, although it was nice.||||What really lets the place down is the staff. The lady who checked us in didn’t seem pleased to see us yet seemed very friendly with the locals. ||||The staff member serving breakfast wasn’t friendly in the slightest. There were lots of empty tables but she wanted us to share a large centre table with another guest in the middle of the dining room. We felt completely in the way (the restaurant is quite cramped). We couldn’t figure out the logic behind this so asked to move. ||||When checking out I went to settle the bill for the minibar and the staff didn’t know how to do this. I paid in cash. Had a call post check out to say they were trying to charge my card for this so god knows what happened to the cash I used to pay this with. It’s quite obvious the staff don’t communicate. ||||Lacks warmth and a welcome reception, felt like an inconvenience rather than a paying customer, wouldn’t stay again for this reason....
