Lovely pub and fantastic staff, but the hotel is lacking. Really friendly staff, great selection of drinks and cocktails in an attractive pub with exceptional outside area. The hotel is not so great. Accommodation is situated in another building, up some concrete steps. Once inside, there is no lift to get to the upper rooms, so we struggled getting our luggage up some flights of stairs. The rooms are very spacious and clean, with a large TV. Beds are soft and comfortable, and the pillows are high quality. The hotel staff were really friendly and attentive, making us feel very welcome. Tea and coffee facilities are provided, however you only get two teabags, two coffees etc per room which isn't enough if there's more than one person. Breakfast is served at the pub next door for an extra charge, but sadly is only available to order until 9.15am. There is a lot of noise at night, which is understandable due to the proximity to a beer garden. However, there is no air conditioning or fans provided in the room, so you have to have the windows open to try and cool the area down. It makes it really difficult to sleep. If possible I recommend you bring your own fan so you can close the windows and block the noise.

Definitely not a 4* hotel and definitely not worth ~Ā£80 per night. Arrived at 2.15pm on a Sunday, was checked in by a lovely member of the bar staff and advised food would be served until 8pm that night. Arrived for dinner at just after 6pm to be told the kitchen had closed at 6pm. Looked around the room which was given what seemed like a glancing clean before we checked in. There was mold around the windows, cobwebs on the ceiling and dust everywhere. It's clear there hasn't been a proper cleaning session in months. Each morning there was a minimal continental breakfast available but we didn't stay long as it was clear there hadn't been any cleaning done from the night before - trampled straws on the floor and food crumbs on the seats. Will not be staying again.

Taneesha is an extremely capable and personable manager (I assume) who knows how to give us the welcome we like to have (even when unknown to her, as I was). I didn’t hesitate to eat and drink and she is a credit to Marstons. Despite being busy and also helping the staff, she checked back regularly around the room and frankly seems to be someone I would always like to have on my team. I heard she’s leaving the Boundary soon for another and wish her well. I stayed, so my overall spend was quite high (sole traveler.)

Absolutely abysmal breakfast with Santa. Firstly walk in and there’s no one directing or seating people, despite pre booking about a month ago. Paid Ā£10 for a breakfast that is normally Ā£2.50, absolutely zero choice of breakfast for the children. My daughter is allergic to milk, I asked for some alternative milk for her to have a bowl of cereal to be told the only milk they have is semi skimmed, meaning my daughter had dry cereal. Same for butter for toast, no alternative butter so she had dry toast which of course she didn’t eat. Then on to the Santa portion, all he did was sit at one table, not even within eye sight from our table, then went and sat by a Christmas tree for a photo. The elf was lovely and chatty, but Santa however didn’t say a single word to my child the whole time we were there. Again, the gift for the child was a Ā£1 chocolate selection bag, which my daughter is allergic to and cried when I told her she couldn’t eat them. Ordered myself, partner and mums breakfast online, only my mums breakfast came. When my partner went to ask where our breakfasts and his coffee were, the staff argued with him and told him we’d already had it! Even though it was clear on the table that there weren’t enough plates for us all. Eventually agreed to be refunded, it was either that or wait for 15 minutes, we’d already been there over an hour at that point and my partner had somewhere to be. Got some of our money back only for the breakfasts to arrive 5 minutes later! Obviously poor communication between the front of house team and kitchen. The continental breakfast was poor too. No bread, juice, butter or Nutella for almost our entire visit, and the selection was really poor too. Also the manager seemed to have gotten confused and thought it was being your young child to work with you day, really unprofessional. We definitely won’t be booking this again next year and I suggest you don’t advertise it either as you’ll only end up with another lot of...

What a dismal experience. Booked a family room back in January for a wedding in the area. After a 5 hour drive, arrived and the entrance/reception was not clear as it's inside the pub (called a restaurant) and was covered with glasses. Was offered a room in the hotel which is in a separate building. Room had one double bed. Returned to reception and was offered a twin room. Explained that I had booked a family room and was told it is company policy to give 2 adults a double room. They didn't even ask if it was a couple at any time in the 9 months after booking! Explained that one adult would like the double bed (again, hence the booking), so was told they would make the sofa up into a bed but it could be half an hour. We went out for over an hour and on return, saw that there wasn't even a sofa in the room, let alone one made up into a bed! Another visit to reception (still covered with glasses from the bar) and the confused manager offered a different room with a double and a sofa but again, would need to give them time to make it up (not offered before, was only offered a twin?). On entering the room, this one also had a double bed only. By this time, we'd been in Alfreton for over 2 hours after our 5 hour drive and still didn't have a bedroom we could relax in. I'd had enough so I asked for a full refund, which was given immediately and booked a different hotel, leaving promptly. What an AWFUL start to what was meant to be a celebratory weekend. Don't use this place, it's a pub, not a...

On the plus side, rooms superb, clean, huge comfortable beds, excellent TV's, only thing spoiled it was the boy racers revving cars and wheelspinning around at 1 and 2 o'clock in the morning on the bit of roadway adjacent to hotel, kept us awake and absolutely spoiled it for us. Food was very good quality breakfasts were good but hotel had overstretched itself on the Saturday night we ate there as it was hosting a wedding and was way out of its depth, some of us got food, others in the same party were still waiting an hour later, queued at the bar to order afters for 20 minutes only to be told "we are not taking any more food orders" I explained we were only halfway through our meal we wanted to order our pudding, but just got a shoulder shrug. The bar was out of drinking glasses, but there were literally hundreds of empties lining the tables inside and out while several young waitresses stood around chatting and doing very little. I have a video clip of one standing at a table eating birthday cake with the guests whilst all around was utter chaos! One elderly lady especially stood out, so much so I asked her her name, it was Mary Walker, her and the manageress on duty literally worked their butt's off running food back and forth, and trying to sort the multitude of problems. I felt so sorry that anyone should have to endure such a stressful and embarrassing working environment, such a shame, if all the staff were as conscientious as these two this could be a...
