Friday night, long week. Decided to nip here for a pint. Felt a bit peckish, and was in the mood for something Chinese adjacent. Checked out the menu, Chicken teriyaki noodles were there, as well as sweet chilli prawns. Ordered in, for the above, with a second pint to chase the meal down. Good selection of fine ales on tap, two casks, four other gas tap craft ales, (and real ciders... Plus largers if that's what you choose to quaff). First pint was duck decoy, Wellbeck Abbey handpull. Delish! Second was a neck oil, by beaver town, gas tap. Two sips into my second pint, food arrived. Perfectly succulent chicken cuts, nestled in a bed of thick and moist udon noodles, thick as. Topped off with some quality prawn crackers. Prawns served in a bowl, with the sweet chilli for dipping, left two of the prawns to soak up the chilli dip, then properly tucked into the veritable feast of noodles, red peppers, green peppers, and sweet onions surrounded the sweet malty, teriyaki drown, chicken peices. Poor main dish couldn't have lasted more than ten minutes before I was saturating the last two prawn sides in the punchy sweet chilli sauce. Nibbled the last two prawns, while conversing with two locals. Friendly and good humoured, very pleasant and warm environment, really dug the coal fire and the bants. Would highly reccomend a meal here, alone or with friends and family. Can eat in the bar area or a very spacious dining room, but the bar has a wholesome logburner and currently adorned with much halloween character and trimmings, so it's more interesting eating front of house.
When i nipped out for a couple of breaths of fresh air, first at sunset, surrounded on all sides by northern farming landscapes and a small lake, and later at nightfall, no light pollution, clear vista of a nights sky.
Fast service, northern character, and a food quality surpassing the cost. A hidden gem. I will return next...
Read moreBank holiday was my first visit to this pub, visiting friends i hadnt seen in a year due to covid, i was looking forward to meeting up in this quaint pub, they'd booked a table at and which came recommended. I was deeply disappointed, first of all being a stickler for the rules i was horrified to see people getting served at the bar, so rules clearly meant nothing here, those of us who werent the landlords friends/regulars had to wait longer to be served at our table. Then to top my afternoon off i witnessed 1 barman who had not long before served us at our table and was very polite and friendly get physically and verbally abused by a customer but what appalled me even more was that nobody seemed to do anything about it, the guy was aloud to just carry on drinking in the pub, i felt uncomfortable , this guy was clearly violent, i asked my friends if we could leave, i wont be visiting again, they dont follow current covid rules, and they clearly dont care about the welfare of others including their staff. I hope the barman is okay he was clearly...
Read moreBooked a family room for one night months in advance. On arrival the room wasn't ready despite us arriving over an hour after check in time. We waited nearly 2 hours for staff to make up our room (which we ended up doing ourselves)and we couldn't leave to go out because they needed access to the room and didn't have a spare key. The staff were really friendly and welcoming and did what they could to accommodate our needs. However the room smelled damp as did the towels, there weren't enough towels for all of us, there was one teacup cup between us and the buscuits were stale, and the bed linen was tired and stained. We struggled to sleep because there was a green emergency light above the door shining across the room which kept us awake. On the plus side the beds were comfortable and the view from our room was lovely. If the staff were better organised, the green light taken out, an extractor that didn't switch off with the light was installed in the bathroom to address the damp issue and bedding updated, it could be a really nice...
