Review of The Grapes Pub, Wrea Green
After a disappointing meal at The Grapes Pub in the past, my girlfriend and I decided to give it another chance, spurred by news of their recent renovation. Arriving slightly early, we were promptly seated, which was a positive start. However, the improvements in decor seemed minimal, leaving us wondering where the supposed six-figure renovation budget was spent.
Despite several available tables, we were seated next to a large, noisy family with small children. This placement did not create the peaceful Sunday afternoon ambiance we were hoping for. We were given menus promptly, with the choice of a Sunday roast or selections from the regular menu. Unfortunately, it took a good 10 minutes before anyone came to take our drink order.
Once ordered, the drinks arrived in a timely manner. However, the wait for our food was excessively long. While my girlfriend and I generally enjoy each other’s company, the 40-minute wait for our meal left us trying to pass the time by observing the rustic beams around us. When the food finally arrived, accompanied by an apology, we were pleased with its quality. I had the pie and my girlfriend had the beef dinner; both dishes were delicious and well-prepared.
The noisy atmosphere made us hesitant to order dessert, but we decided to go for it. After requesting the dessert menu, we waited another 15 minutes before it arrived. I ordered the sticky toffee pudding and my girlfriend chose the apple tart. Unfortunately, the desserts took an additional half hour to arrive, again with an apology. Both desserts were lukewarm at best, but we ate them anyway.
During our meal, we observed another table dealing with an unfortunate mistake: a dairy-intolerant child was served non-vegan ice cream despite it being advertised as vegan. They received a full refund and left.
When it came time to settle the bill, we found a bottle of wine erroneously added from another table. This was corrected, and when asked about our experience, I shared our concerns for future reference.
In summary, The Grapes Pub is not a bad place to eat if you have the patience to spend the whole day there. The staff are friendly, though they seem slightly undertrained. If you manage to avoid being seated next to a noisy family, it might be an...
Read moreWent for a family meal and did not have a great experience. The toilets were closed but decent portaloo's had been positioned outside, the toilet roll holder was empty with the roll of paper placed on the sink, allowing it to get wet. There were no paper towels for drying your hands and no hand sanitizer insight! The draft bitter is nothing to write home about (absolutely nowhere near CAMRA standard). The food had no quality control, the place was not busy (not that you can use that as an excuse) but the starters arrived and 1 of the 3 patè portions appeared to be hastily thrown together, the prawn cocktail came with brown, mushy avocado on it and when we pointed this out we were told that this was all they had apart from the frozen ones. The Gormet Beef burger with skin-on fries was served with half a plate of ordinary chips made with bad tasting potatoes, the free range egg was free from taste and the burger had no flavour and certainly no seasoning, in fact the only flavour I could detect was the cremated bacon! My wife ordered the signature fish and chips with mushy peas and was served the standard fish and chips. When the correct meal came the batter tasted of old oil, half way through the fish it seemed like rubber and the mushy peas tasted washed out with no flavour (no better than a supermarket own brand)! We were offered complimentary desserts but 3 of them had run out and the ones we had seemed to be the hastily thawed out pre-frozen ones! With hindsight I think we would have been better going to a well known...
Read moreVisited The Grapes today and left thinking I will never return again! We live in Wrea Green and love to support local businesses, but I am sorry to say we will no longer be supporting this one! I chose the Steak and Ale pie, the meat was extremely fatty so much so that I didn't eat any! The mash tasted like it was old and had been re-heated and altogether tasted like a cheap microwave meal. I mentioned it to, who I believed was the duty manager and she replied by just saying "oh"! No apology, no I'll mention it to the chef. She then had the audacity to return to our table, without mentioning anything asked us if we wanted more drinks or desserts. I was dumfounded by the lack of customer service. I then caught the attention of another member of staff to relay what had happened and still no explanation! As we went to pay the duty manager caught sight of us and turned away. I asked her if she had got my message and she said she had. I then said did you not think of offering an apology to which she replied and said that she had and that she said she'd mention it to the chef, which was a blatant lie. My husband was with me and he too could not believe it. We paid our bill in full and left. What a shame our local pub, in a pretty village, we live 5 minutes walk away from and will no longer return. It is the second dreadful meal I have had in...
