Maharani Indian Restaurant — Restaurant in Borough of Swale

I previously rated this 4 stars and have been attending a few times in the past but I am now downgrading to 1 star as last night we attended here and had a very bad experience.

WILL NOT BE ATTENDING AGAIN. MAHARANI you have lost 3 customers by purposely overcharging us. That amount you overcharged us has lost you ever getting 3 people who used to regularly attend your restaurant. That is BAD BUSINESS. You have lost more in future revenue than you ever overcharged us by. Will be reporting to trading standards unless they can sort this all out as this is against the law.

I am a registered local guide and I want to reiterate that anyone who decides to addend despite this review to CHECK THE BILL thoroughly.

Now let me back up my review with some facts: Myself and 3 friends had our meal and when it came for time to pay we got showed a bill with just a total price, not itemized. We asked for it to be itemized so we could split the bill so instead they brought out a calculator and proceeded to add up the items WITHOUT A MENU so we still didn't know the prices they were charging us.

Just before we left we checked the prices on the menu (for example my menu was as follows. (Rogan Josh) 6.30 + (Pilau rice) 2.40 + (Peshwari Naan) 3.10 + (Peacocks Cider) 4.50 = 16.30. With a tip I was happy to pay 17 but after the fuss i decided to retract that however I was charged TWENTY POUNDS. We asked for the menu when paying and was told 'I know the prices do not worry' and after much fuss we decided just to pay up and leave. I personally was overcharged 3.70 and my two other friends were also overcharged a similar amount too.

To top it off when paying, the total of the bill was just over £53 and once we added up what us 3 individually paid we was charged just over £55! the numbers were all over the place. We got so fed up we just decided to call it quits and leave. We also wasn't allowed to keep the receipt as they quickly took it...

The food was great tasting and fair value. I have nothing to complain about food as that was great.

However the restaurant is quite compact leaving it very tight when busy (you can easily elbow the person on next table over) and the general decor seemed dull and dark.

Also I found the staff to be sour in face. They never cracked a smile nor really made any effort to welcome me and my friend.

Lastly I felt rushed. Last time I went was on a Monday so it was very quiet, despite this the staff had brought out the starters before we even made it half way through the poppadoms, and we had only started our starter before they begun to bring out the mains. We asked them to slow down as whilst we were eating they kept attempting to clear up the table around us. It was just a little annoying as it gave the presence of them wanting to rush us and get us out. Not to forget we were sat near the bar so we had like 2-3 people just standing next to us at any one time.

This restaurant have absolutely disgusting customer service. We always order from here through Uber Eats or visit in person if we are nearby. Tonight we had an issue where we received something else instead of the Cheese Naan that we have ordered.

I called them to try and explain and they kept interrupting me and cutting me off, not allowing me to speak. I was trying to explain what the random item was in my delivery; but he wasn’t interested. Instead he tried to tell me I never ordered a Cheese Naan and that there was no Naans on my order at all.

Hopefully this review will be bought to his attention and he’ll see the receipt I’ve got which clearly shows I did order, and pay, for a cheese naan - which they failed to send. Rather than try and make out I never ordered it, perhaps it would’ve just been easier to accept they made a mistake.
