I'm not a train enthusiast in the slightest but this is where my partner came when she was a wee girl and we now take our two to enjoy seeing real steamies doing their thing.
This is an incredibly authentic railway and if you have even a passing interest in steam locomotion, you really should give the SKLR a visit. It doesn't run through bucolic landscapes but the fact it runs through industrial estates connects it more to its history and is all the better for it. Everything feels right and proper here.
A return journey is approximately 30 minutes on the tracks and at the Kemsley end, there is a small museum, gift shop and coffee shop. Seems a small point, but the toilets were immaculately clean (both men's and women's) and are a credit to the staff who maintain them.
On that note, a special mention must go to all the staff and volunteers across the whole site... They are friendly and knowledgeable and will ensure you have a super day.
A family ticket is £20 at the time of writing and in my opinion offers great value. A lovely way to spend a couple of hours.
Thanks to all...
Read moreas some one who has bad social skills and anxiety i managed to go by myself (i was 15 at the time) and as i walked along the shore way to get there. as i got in i did not know were to get a rover ticket. so i asked a volonteer and he showed me where to buy the ticket. as i was supposed to get the 1:30 but i timed it badly, i had time to spare. i went into the museum and there was a good display of items but my faveroute part was looking at all the locos on display. however i am sad that bear is no longer at the railway. The trip was fantastic. i ended up going on the train 4 times. in the end i ended up getting a cup and a post card. i realised that i had time to get to the crossing as i am waiting there premier had a fult so it had to stop which meant that i got a picture. this is my local railway that is roughly a 20 minuet walk from my house. love the industrial railways. hopefully i will be able to go during the end of season...
Read moreI've visited this unique industrial heritage railway since the 80's and bearing in mind it served Sittingbourne and Kemsley papermills with now only Kemsley still in existence it's a miracle it's still going. Not only that, but still going with the same locos, carriages and wagons it ran originally. If you are looking for a true piece of Sittingbournes industrial heritage look no further! A superb steam train ride out across the long viaduct, through the country park into sight of Kemsley papermill. Here you'll find a museum, shop, gardens, garden railway and model village, a café with a grassed area outside with plenty of benches, picnic tables and a 5" ride on railway which runs alongside the creek. A very affordable good day out for the family. During the operating season they also have special events which also seem very popular including Santa Specials which always gain...
