Bengal Raj — Restaurant in Bristol

Myself and family have eaten in the restaurant and have also ordered take out countless times throughout the years.

We run ‘ACHHA’s’ which is a family-run Anglo-Indian food takeout service orientated around fresh, high quality home cooked food - I eat and prepare enough fresh, quality Indian food to know the standard that goes into the dishes at Bengal Raj, we also find them to be very consistent! I have had my fair share of curries over the years and Bengal Raj are steps are steps above them all.

As a nutritionist also, I appreciate when a takeout puts a bit more effort into the balance of their ingredients and uses the right amount of oil/salt/sugar etc - I never ever find the dishes are excessive in oil, salt or sugar. In fact, my food never has any excess oil surrounding it which is usually quite common with most indian takeouts/restaurants.

Overall, Bengal are hands down the best traditional Indian take out in Bristol, we have recommended then to countless friends and family over the years and there has only ever been positive feedback.

The food itself was nice. Some things better than others. Good: chicken masala, chicken kerala, chutney sides (lemon pickle was great), garlic naan. Not so good: peswari naan (tasted rather plain, not enough coconut).

Stars knocked off as they say online they are open till 930, and on the door it says 11. However, we got there at half 8 and they said they would close at 9. One waiter (younger) was nice and said it was OK, we could still have our meal. It got to 9.10, we had very nearly finished. The older waiter came to clear the plates and I said to wait as my friend was still eating. He was quite abrupt and said "We close at 9. You were told when you came." We were a bit taken back as the younger waiter said it was fine for us to eat when we arrived, and you don't expect to be rushed to finish your meal. Fine, you're closed, clean the tables around us, but at least be polite and let us eat the food on our plate.

PLEASE UPDATE YOUR OPENING TIMES AS IT WOULD SOLVE...

I went in to ask for a table for one at 8:30pm but told I wouldn’t be served because there weren’t any other customers and they wanted to go home. Google Maps says they close at 9:30pm. I told them this and they said they knew but didn’t want to change this.

I convinced them to let me eat, but they insisted I shouldn’t ask for a starter.

I asked for anything vegan and they said no, that everything is cooked using animal products.

I told them I would leave this review, they said they were sorry. I left. Will not...
