Had a late Sunday lunch here. We booked in advance as the reviews seemed to identify it as being popular. Glad we did as our table was for 5 pm and we were able to book the meats we required in advance so as not to be disappointed. The meal was excellent, I had the roast beef, hubby the pork and turkey, all very tender. Veg cooked so it still had a bite accompanied by a majestic Yorkshire pudding which dominated the plate. Couldn’t fault it. Staff very pleasant and welcoming. Only given four stars because after such a large meal we couldn’t face trying a dessert, however watch this space as we shall be returning!
Update as stated above but not about the food, which was good and value for the money and still too filling for us to attempt the dessert selection 😬. Friday night, busy pub, thought we’d have a quiet drink as it’s out of season…… silly us 🤭. However when we asked to move tables, as with hearing impairments we found it difficult, with the background noise, Romey (sorry if I’ve misspelt that 😬) didn’t blink an eye and we moved to a quieter area. What a star this young lady is, from when we arrived to when we left she was very attentive to everyone, asking if the meal was ok and clearing the tables quickly, can’t sing her praises highly enough, such a lovely bubbly character; a real credit...
Read moreLovely atmosphere, very welcoming. Menu seems full but it seems full of nothing. I felt the menu was limited. Nice to see a pie on there but it was chicken, ham and leek. Didn't appeal to anyone. Might have been nice to see a steak and ale pie or something. I had fish and chips, the meal was actually very nice, good quality and plenty of it. Just a shame on the lack luster menu. The chef had cooked the fish beautifully, and the peas I think had butter melted in them which was a really tasty touch. I think the chip were underdone, they had that starchy taste that i wasn't keen on, but that was the only criticism on a very lovely meal. Also, they had a couple of extra ciders in boxes that was a lovely accompanyment to the normal bog standard over fizzy aspalls that everyone seems to sell. Oh, proper onion rings, cooked really well, , I think. The chips let my meal down a bit which was a real shame as everything else deserved full marks. I just can't justify giving the meal 5 out of 5 when the chips were underdone and chips are such a big part of fish and chips. If the chips were a little thinner they would be perfect, but as they were fat chips they just needed a little longer to lose that...
Read moreWe sat in the garden on a dry but cloudy day, watching the boats go by and the swing bridge closing and opening to let trains through. There is a little play park for the kids and an outdoor marquee for shelter when there is poor weather. We didn't sit inside as we ordered at the bar near the entrance and stayed outside, but it looked like a nice traditional pub inside. The service was really friendly and attentive even though we were outside. The food was really well cooked, my husband had Hunters chicken which he really enjoyed and I had a, "Small plate" of Bang bang chicken on a bed of rice." My chicken was succulent, really well spiced with a good bit of chilli heat and a lovely sticky sauce. As it was advertised as a small plate , I had a side of thick cut chips (but really for lunch, wouldn't have needed these.) They were however great chips, double cooked and really tasty. The choice of real ales was good, some from the local brewery and the ales very well kept. I would definitely revisit and recommend...even outside on an...
