I write to you from the humble frontier settlement of The Highfield, where weary travelers may lay down their burdens and lift up their spirits in glorious abundance.
Now, I must speak plainly of a marvel I encountered there — a towering creation known only as The Big Beef Burger. Verily, it was no ordinary ration of beef, but a mountainous portion so vast it could feed Pa, Ma, and half the Ingalls homestead through a long winter blizzard. Each bite was a hymn of joy, seasoned with the very laughter of the prairie wind.
And lo, beside it flowed the golden river known as Carling Black Label Lager. Cold as a spring creek in April, and smoother than Nellie Oleson’s smug smile, it refreshed my parched throat after a hard day’s toil (or at least after watching someone else’s hard day’s toil).
Now, I must tip my bonnet to Chris, the noble keeper of this fine establishment. With the patience of a schoolteacher and the wisdom of Reverend Alden, he guided us through our meal as though we were tender lambs lost in the tall grass.
Should you find yourself wandering the wide open plains of The Highfield, stop in. Saddle your hunger, tie up your thirst, and let Chris set you right with a Big Beef Burger and a Carling...
Read moreLovely staff, very friendly, polite, efficient service. We were able to get a table without pre-booking.
The menu had a bit of everything that covers the basics but overall the choice was quite limited. It took a while to find something that we were happy to order and not one of the four of us found anything that we were really excited to order.
Prices are standard for the regular pub grub meals these days. They did have an offer on, 2 mains for £9.50 or something like that? The food was relatively quick to arrive. I had the gammon and chips. The gammon was lovely with the egg and the piece with pineapple was absolutely beautiful!
The chips however were not especially good. I only had a handful on my plate but I'm glad I didn't have more as I didn't eat all of them. They were fat chips (which I don't really like but will occasionally eat) but they were... I don't know how to describe them?
Some didn't seem to have any potato in the middle and were just crispy and not nice to eat. That's the main reason for the 4 out of 5 star rating.
We more than likely will go here again but it won't be as a first choice, more as somewhere different to go when we have been to other places...
Read moreStaff were really good but food was very disappointing. I had the salt & pepper mushrooms for my starter. Couldnt taste salt, pepper or mushrooms, just overcooked batter/breadcrumbs (couldnt even tell what it was). My son's tortillas chips were lovely, but totally unnecessary (and rather strange) to cover everything in spring onions (which he had to scrape off and leave) - there's no mentions of spring onions on the menu. For mains we had the sizzling plates - I had the salmon, which was fine, but my son had the rump steak, cooked medium well done. When it arrived it was well overcooked and very dry, he was very disappointed as this was his birthday meal. We did tell the staff and they were very apologetic, with both the waitress and manager offering us either a drink or a dessert, but we had had enough at that time of the day. We said all we wanted was for the chef to be told that it wasnt satisfactory, so he can correct for others. They did say that the steak carries on cooking on the sizzling plate which we totally understand, but in that case shouldnt the chef undercook the steak so that it is correct once it reaches...
