We were looking forward to eating at the Anchor Bleu as the ratings seemed good and it was recommended to us. We were greeted by friendly staff who showed us to the table we'd booked in advance. We were expecting to be told the ordering process at that point but had to ask what it was after being left sitting like lemons for some time. Menus were on blackboards which we couldn't see from our table so we had to keep getting up to see what was on offer - not ideal with covid. We ordered whitebait as a starter, which was very good but the actual amount of whitebait was very small and was bulked out by being lobbed on top of an unnecessary amount of salad in attempt to make the starter look bigger. As this was not a cheap starter at £8.50 we felt more than a little cheated. I would dispense with the salad to be honest as it didn't work and just serve the whitebait on its own with wedges of lemon. We had also ordered sea bass with a lemon and caper butter sauce. The pub manager came over and apologised that they didn't have the lemon and caper sauce but the chef could do a coriander and mint sauce. Not a problem we said and waited for our main course to arrive. After a very long wait the manager came over and apologised again that they had run out of sea bass but they could do cod instead. Again we said no problem. So we waited again for our main ... and waited ... and waited ... It eventually arrived 50 minutes later. The cod was nicely cooked but again the portion was very small for the price and again it came with salad - which was how it was advertised to be fair - when a selection of steamed veg would have been much nicer - salad with a hot main is a lazy option and doesn't work well. We then ordered a cheeseboard to share as we were still hungry. We had informed the pub in advance that I have coeliac disease and in this day and age I would have expected some gluten free crackers or bread as an option ... but no! The cheese was ok but a bit bog standard consisting of cheddar, brie and goats' cheese which had come straight from the fridge so was rock hard - no blue cheese either. There are so many fantastic locally produced cheeses available these days that we found the cheese selection a bit disappointing, again especially considering the price. But what really flicked me on the raw most about this pub was when the young blonde man came over after our meal and asked how was everything was. I said we were disappointed with the long wait and the portion sizes. Instead of apologising and taking my comments on board he got arsey with me saying that they were very busy and they didn't just have the area we were sitting in 'you know' but upstairs and outside as well. No our problem frankly and if you don't want an honest answer then don't ask the question. Considering how very accommodating we had been I was annoyed at the attitude we got from this young man and it made me feel very awkward. I just folded my arms and went quiet in response. I don't know ... maybe we just hit on a bad night but the whole place felt more than a little random and a bit Fawlty Towers. My pet hate is so called gourmet pubs who are trading on their location to charge a premium for average food and small portions. If you are going to charge premium prices then the food and portion size has to reflect that. Not sure if we'd return or not - the reviews are generally good so might give it another go in the hope that it will be less of a...
Read moreCame in after a walk across the shoreline from Havant. The pub and the area it is in is absolutely adorable and very traditional. With the sunshine beaming and the sea at your doorstep its an ideal place to relax and have a bite to eat. Whilst being more expensive than a Wetherspoons or other pubs, it's worth the price (£2.50 half pint of coke, £5.something for a cheesecake, £6.something for a sandwich). The pub is also decorated with fantastic images and paintings of Bosham and its history, making you feel the community spirit.
A friend and I had the bacon and brie sandwich. Whilst we waited around 40 minutes because all food was made to order, once it had arrived it definitely redeemed itself. Tasted absolutely delicious so we even stayed for a cheeky white chocolate cheesecake. Great food from start to finish.
We entered around 1315-1330 and it was packed, but numbers soon dropped within 10 minutes and finding a table was easy. There's upstairs seating, outback away from the sea wind, out front on a porch with a coast view (dogs are not allowed in this section) and of course the cosy inside seating.
Overall a lovely visit to make a beautiful day even better, will be returning if I'm ever...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreArrived here Sunday afternoon. Totally unwelcoming staff (two older people- one male, one female). Rude, sarcastic and unpeasant- itās like they didnāt want us in there/ or any other customers for that matter. Bar flies everywhere. On fly flew right into my eye and the man behind the bar (middle aged guy, very direct), made a sarcastic joke instead of trying to help. Made me feel stupid and cleverly turned this round on the customer. It seemed like after the food service is over, there is zero customer service. The ladies toilets were dirty and clearly hadnāt been cleaned. You really have a captive market here but my advice to you as an establishment is this - you never know who people are, what business they may bring you and ultimately- everyone should be treated with respect. We are giving you custom and the way we were spoken to and treated by both the male and female middle aged members of staff made us feel so uncomfortable that we decided to leave. Totally unprofessional, unpleasant and unnecessary. What a shame to treat people like that. We will not be returning and we will be advising our friends and family...
