Historically, The Wagon & Horses hasn't been known as a desirable spot to visit. However, after a recent renovation, it certainly looks better inside. But, despite the fresh coat of paint, some of the old clientele remain, which might be deterring new customers.
We visited on a Saturday evening, and to our surprise, the place was empty. It seems the pub is making more money from selling beer to the locals than from serving food, which is unfortunate because the food is actually quite good. I tried the Diablo pizza, and it was delicious, cooked perfectly in a wood-fired oven. The prices are reasonable, although I'm skeptical about any further increases beyond the current £14 mark without driving customers away.
There were some downsides to our visit. The TV was blaring, making it difficult to have a conversation without shouting. While it's nice to have TVs for watching sports, the volume needs to be turned down. Additionally, I was charged £8.50 for a glass of wine and a pint of blackcurrant cordial, which seems excessive and could be a deterrent for future visits.
The new owners face a tough decision: Is The Waggon & Horses primarily a pub or a restaurant? If they continue to focus on selling alcohol to the local crowd, they risk alienating potential diners. Sadly, if this path is chosen, the pub may struggle to survive and will likely change hands again in the future or even...
Read moreToday I had a very nice pizza with my wife here . We had a small free bread snack with olives and oils , the staff was very nice during our entire stay. The welcoming could do a bit of a improvement, since it was around 4 p.m., and there were just the 2 of us (lovebirds on the 14th of Feb) . The pizza was very nice 👌. The toilets were very clean . The tables and chairs were very clean compared with the stickiness found on every other English pub . The variety on the food and drinks menu was OK. The room temperature was very comfortable, and the beer was perfect 👌 .
Things they could improve from my perspective:
I wish they could add in the menu "Allioli" . I would suggest they can add an ashtray outside or a small bin for the cigarette buds . A bit of Italian music could to a small but important touch, not really important but it could be nice 😀.
A will come back soon, and I will also recommend as...
Read moreIf you're looking for wood fired pizza, unfortunately this isn't the place to go. We ordered the focaccia as a starter - this was not focaccia. It appears to be folded pizza dough with the meats and cheese described enclosed and very very heavy on garlic which wasn't included in the description. This pizza itself was not what I would expect a wood fired pizza to be. The flavour texture and appearance reminded me of a shop bought pizza that had been cooked in a wood fired oven. There was some char on the base but no rise of bubbling on the crust as you would expect. The staff were very apologetic and asked if I wanted something else from the menu and did continue to apologise as we left. The pub has a nice feel and it's clear the interior has been updated recently with a good selection of...
