What a fantastic little eatery! Spontaneously decided to go out for dinner and after mumbling and grumbling about the 'same old same old' restaurants in our own area (Walsall), I remembered this bus from last year when I collected a takeaway order (Deliveroo driver). Being a lover of Caribbean food and as it's my birthday in two days, I was allowed to rule in favour of eating here so we drove our Kia SOUL the 12 miles to Soul Inah Bowl.
The boss lady made us feel welcome, sat down with us to take our order and took the time to discuss options. She was perfectly polite and seemed absolutely genuine throughout. Breath of fresh air after so many past experiences of kids straight from high school, who don't know what a smile is, who just want to get paid over doing a good job.
Now, I'm the biggest skeptic for miles around owing to being disappointed so many times - reading very positive reviews before trying new places only to get the complete opposite experience to all those positive reviewers. So I admit I wasn't exactly enthused on arrival, and then after seeing how limited the menu was I actually started having regrets - I love me some sides! We do what we usually do when going somewhere new and ordered several things we could share - we do this in case some things are rubbish so we still have other things to eat (yes, that's how often we've had terrible experiences...). Everything was fantastic, full of flavour, nicely presented with fresh ingredients. The kid tried a bit of everything and for a fussy insert-profanity-here she actually really enjoyed the bits she tried, she soon filled up so she couldn't eat her own fries! Despite purposefully over-ordering, as mentioned earlier, we ate everything except the missus left a couple handfuls of the fries from her dirty fries (I picked the best bits out, don't worry).
For pudding, only chocolate brownie was on offer which was fine by us. Oh! My! Days and weeks! So soft and very rich, with some very nice and creamy ice cream, chocolate sauce, some sweet biscuity crumbs and (took me by surprise) some mango coulis which actually went all together fantastically well. BUT! WAAIITTT A MINUTE! Afterwards, when chatting with the chef about how amazing his food is, he told us the pudding was entirely plant-based! I literally nearly slid off the seat I was perched on in surprise. I am the LAST person anyone expects to turn vegan but if vegan food tasted as good as that pudding, I'd convert tomorrow! I am usually the first to moan about how bland vegan food is, I swear if chef hadn't said anything, I'd never have known.
I've tried food from every single Caribbean takeaway and restaurant in Willenhall and Walsall and none of them compare to Soul Inah Bowl. I personally felt like the food we received came out of a fancy restaurant, not a kitchen at the back of a converted bus! The chef is clearly talented and after chatting with him we could tell he was passionate about food and flavours and tricking meat-eaters with vegan surprises!
We will...
Read moreMe and my husband visited Soul Inah Bowl yesterday and were completely blown away from the second we got there. The hospitality of Chef Greg was second to none - he was so bubbly and his happiness was infectious, we instantly felt welcome and excited to be there. We tried his signature rum punch and we don't think we've ever tasted a rum punch as good as this one, we had three in the end! You can either dine in the 'karaoke bar' or the upstairs of a converted double decker bus, we chose the bus. It was so quirky and felt really unique to be dining there, we had bells to ring for attention and there were some old school games that you could play whilst you waited. We ordered crispy chicken strips with jerk BBQ sauce and bangin calamari to start, both sensational. I was worried about the bangin sauce being too spicy but it was the most flavoursome, warming sauce that we wanted to lick the bowl clean when we were done! We then tried the jerk BBQ pulled pork burger, the BBQ jerk boneless chicken which comes with fried plantain, rice and peas and veg, a fried dumpling as a side and some scotch bonnet jam. The burger was packed with quality meat and bursting with flavour, fries were so crispy, the jerk chicken sauce was so good I kept having to dip my chips in it, and the dumpling was perfectly crispy and light. All their sauces are made in house and the ethos of the place is to bring a bit of the Carribbean to Cradley! We had the most incredible time and we're already planning our next visit so we can try more of the food (and get more rum punch!) I cannot recommend this place...
