After going to the mexican place next door one night with a friend i noticed Spice Cottage. Since then ive tried to make the effort to come out here and try it. Believe me Burwell isnt the kinda place you just so happen to pass through. You have to make the effort to come here to visit. The first impressions arent great. Its just a white square building which is often the first deception with most tandooris. They look small and unflattering on the outside but often are the best ones once you get inside! When we went in it was 7pm on a Friday night and the place was empty. We were seated immediately. The place just like the outside looked like a white box on the inside with a few pictures of India stuck on the wall. The waiter took 3 attempts to get our drink order right which i put down to accent barriers but the worst was yet to come. They claimed to be having Health and Safety inspectors in at the time so we ended up sitting there with poppadoms for 75mins!!! no word of a lie.
However in their defence this was actually one of the nicest curries ive ever had. The portions were good and the curry was hot. It tasted lovely. Needless to say we were too busy stuffing our faces to actually make conversation lol. Anna did mention however this could have been down to us waiting so long and being VERY hungry!
I like to think that the Health and Safety excuse is genuin because if it was then this would be one of my favorite places (decoration and apperance dont mean much to me in a tandoori!)
....Until we got the bill.
We always order the same thing (give or take) to judge each tandoori by the same merits and dish. Which means the bill is often roughly the same price. Usually ranging from £22 - £26. This place however was very expencive coming to about £36 for the both of us!!! This did include an extra drink each (because of the long wait) which we were half expecting to be free! Obviously not!
As far as i can see the chef is carrying this place. The service was slow, unreliable and the place looked like an empty hall with no decorations. It was expencive and they didnt seem to give us anything in return for wasting half our night waiting for them to cook. On the flip side if your willing to drive out this far you will get free parking! Which often shaves about £3 off the bill lol!
I was very let down by this place and will not be going again. They have pointed me to the Meghna Tandoori on Victoria Road which is their sister place. I shall be trying this place tonight. Lets hope they still have the same high quality food but at a much better price, without having to wait...
Read moreNice looking place, went because of the good reviews. Had a table at 6.30 on a busy Saturday night. We had starters and admittedly took some time to choose. Service was slow though, very slow, by the time we got drinks and ordered we were then told two of the things we wanted were not available. They should have said at the start, but we ordered. It then it took forever to get food despite not being too busy in the restaurant at that time and even the extra drinks we ordered I had to ask where they were. Sadly, we couldn't drink the tap water as it tasted of chemicals, either sterilising tablets or dishwasher detergent so had to go with bottled. Once the food arrived we had no complaints and wolfed it down, very tasty, well presented and we were very hungry by that point. Sadly this place suffers from the same thing Siam Saab and The Chequers and many other restaurants do, the Diner's service suffers at the expense of the take-out customers, please get more staff! In the end the experience was not worth the price tag of nearly £25 pp and we may only be back for a take-out if 'The Old Scotch' in...
Read moreIt was a busy Saturday night and we turned up for a table for 4 people without making a reservation. We experienced a very worm welcome by the management and got a table within 5 minutes although the restaurant was almost packed. Following the drinks and Papadams we tried the 'Chef's special Sharing plates', they were absolutely delicious. Very lovely and friendly staff, recommended us some of the uncommon dishes that you hardly can find in any Traditional Indian Restaurant. From the SPECIALITY BOARD, we tried SEA MIXED GRILL, mouthwatering and terrific lovely taste, that I never tasted before along with Spicy Chilli Fusion and other regular stuff, rice, Naan etc. Thoroughly enjoyed the DINING OUT. WILL GO AGAIN, by booking the table. Just don't want...
