I was in need of a day outing and decided to go to Ely. I found this cafe greatly recommended online and decided to give it a try. I drove for one hours so my expectations were high!
I read reviews saying it wasn't outstanding, that it was expensive but PLEASE don't let this put you off.
Let me tell you why you should go to this place: Because you will feel completely at ease, as if you were at home sitting with friends, even if like me, you're sitting by yourself with a book. The staff all spoke to me as if I was a local that returns everyday. Everyone had a smile, made sure to ask how my day was and EVEN came outside of the front gate to wave goodbye as I left. Where else have you been to a place like this?
I'm not a tea drinker and I was a bit fearful that that was going to be the only drinks option. WRONG. Milkshakes, bayleys hot chocolate, delicious juices! Where to choose from! Honestly, I wish this was closer to home. I would be there everyday.
How can this place be overpriced when you feel leaving not only satisfied with your meal but also with a smile on your face?
Oh yeah, I saw a dog getting dog treats without anyone asking for them. As a fellow waitress I know how far this goes with people! Outstanding. Did I mention the outdoors library for you to pick up book as you drink your tea?
Thank you very much for a lovely visit! I will be back and bring more...
Read moreLovely staff, a large selection of tea, suitable for vegetarians (less options for vegans, but there are some), and dog friendly.
There are no bookings, you visit and queue for a table. We went at 11am on Sunday and there were plenty of seats available and opted to sit outside.
The tea was lovely (recommended by staff), no milk needed, grateful for the option (no soya milk, oat milk available). We had toasted sandwiches, we were given the option of white or granary bread, toasted or non-toasted.
Tea came out fairly quickly, sandwiches came out a short time after. Lovely tea, the crockery was beautiful. Tasty food, interesting options. There were other options available for brunch like scones and cakes. My friend (no dietary reqs) had a banana and bacon sandwich and highly recommends it. I don't eat meat, I opted for a cheese and apple sandwich on granary toasted (pictured).
We had a dog with us, the staff brought him biscuits, he was excited every time they came by. Quite a lot of dogs, suitable for dog lovers, if not or if you're allergic, you may ask the staff to find you a suitable table.
Lovely location close to the river. Looking forward to...

So this place is so conveniently located (by the river) that it could have got away with high prices and low(er) quality....however...can I just say this place whilst not cheap...is sooo worth the money.
First of all the decor is very traditional English Tearoom - china plates, tea pots etc..so that in itself is lovely.
Then the food...honestly it was so good, and just felt like it was all prepared and presented with with care. Didn't have the scones, but had mega scone envy - so just on looks alone i would recommend you order one of those. We had a Welsh rarebit and a beetroot, goats cheese, walnut and honey on toasted bread light lunch. Very tasty! And not just a token side salad..a decent lovely dressed salad.
Proper loose leaf tea, and when I was done...I was brought another hot water to replenish my pot.
The staff are fab. Our waiter was super polite, young lad with impeccable customer service...real asset to the team.
Left very happy. Bill was £30 for two lunches and a...
