A little gem easy to find near the high street. Very interesting content on the history of the place throughout the ages and different societies and cultures. Fascinating how 'The Wash' to the north /NE is linked to this area. Beautiful sets of artifacts exhibited from various local finds and periods. Something else worthy of note: the local folklore seems to make quite a few references to 'wise women' - not necessarily witches! The locality and its environs also suffered hugely from the draughting of young blood (mostly men) during the first World War. It's quite obvious that the town lost out to other regional cities and took longer to recover. There are many exemplars of letters and other documents attesting to the suffering both of those enrolled abroad (the Somme etc) and their families left behind, but also some correspondence showing hope,...
Read moreAbsolute gem of a museum - really well refurbished to a high modern standard with simple but fun interactive elements for younger visitors (my two love the floor-level vignettes especially). Ticket price includes a whole year entry so is extremely good value. Toilets are always clean and available including baby changing. The toddler group on Fridays once a month (little explorers) is really fantastic. We always have a warm welcome and learn a little bit more about local history each time we visit - the old goal cell is fascinating, and the gold torc is stunning. Highly recommended for families looking for an activity for children of all ages including very young, and for all visitors to Ely who want to see more than just...
Read moreQuant little museum in an old jail. They kept some of the original building and interior so you can see that. Cost is £6.50 per person which seems a bit pricey for the building size.
They do however have a stunning display of items from across the centuries. They showcase what Ely was like in the past to current times. Part of the showcase is for when it was a jail. They have buttons to press so you can hear what some of the inmates said about jail life
This is definitely kid friendly as there are a few places for them to interact. When in the room with the insects, grab the flashlight to find the ultraviolet flowers on the wall.
They have a small store to get some souvenirs or other...
