I recently stayed at The Blue Jay for two nights while attending a work conference, and I couldn’t be more impressed with the level of service I received—especially from one exceptional team member who truly went above and beyond.

Upon arrival, I was warmly welcomed by a lovely gentleman at reception who made check-in seamless. When I got to my room, I had trouble connecting to the WiFi, so I went back down to ask for help. He kindly explained it was a phone settings issue and guided me through fixing it. Thanks to his help, I was online in no time.

Later that evening, I headed down for dinner and was pleasantly surprised when he approached me again just to check that my WiFi was working—such thoughtful follow-up! I ordered a medium steak, but when it arrived, it was well done. Before I could say anything, the same gentleman came over to check on my meal. When I mentioned the overcooked steak, he immediately offered to bring me another one or anything else from the menu at no extra charge. I initially declined, but he insisted with a smile, saying, “You’re a young lady—I’m not going to let you starve!” I asked for his recommendation, and he confidently suggested the burger.

In no time, a perfectly cooked, delicious burger arrived—and it hit the spot! Honestly, I wasn’t even disappointed about the steak anymore. His kind, attentive, and genuinely caring attitude completely turned the situation around and made me feel like a truly valued guest.

My stay at The Blue Jay was wonderful, and it’s all thanks to the outstanding service I received. It’s rare to encounter someone so dedicated to guest satisfaction. I left not only impressed but genuinely touched by...

Imagine this: you saunter into a pub expecting a lively hubbub, but instead, find yourself in a scene straight out of a Sunday afternoon nap. Not unpleasant, mind you, just a tad…uneventful. But fear not, for a culinary surprise awaits: a jacket potato and vegetable chili that shatters pub fare expectations.

The potato, a textural masterpiece of fluffy innards and perfectly crisped skin, surrenders to your fork with grace. Each bite is a comforting earthward journey, a blank canvas primed for the chili's artistic strokes. And what an artist it is! A vibrant medley of vegetables dances on your palate, each retaining its individuality while contributing to the harmonious whole. The warmth builds gradually, a gentle caress rather than a fiery assault. Spices whisper secrets of cumin and coriander, each whisper adding depth and intrigue. This isn't pub chili; it's a revelation, a hidden gem unearthed in the most unexpected of places.

However, like a beautiful melody fading into silence, the atmosphere couldn't quite match the culinary crescendo. While pleasant, it lacked the spark that could have truly elevated the experience. Think: spotlight on the plate, the rest bathed in comfortable but forgettable shadows.

So, to recommend this pub? Absolutely, but with a caveat. Come for the exceptional chili, a dish worthy of standing ovations. Just be prepared to bring your own lively company, for the atmosphere might leave you yearning for a touch more drama. This is a hidden gem, indeed, but one waiting to be polished to...

If you would like to sleep past 7 am I would check when they are getting the grass cut. 7:10am and they are cutting the grass with the noisiest lawnmower you have ever heard followed by a strimmer then leaf blower!!. Looking forward to my day on only 3 hours sleep. Thanks marstons inn

Also to add if you pay the 20 extra for a late checkout and specifically ask reception If nobody will be going in my room as you are working nights, be prepared for a loud knock, someone entering your room asking why you haven't checked out. Absolutely ridiculous! Me and my colleague in separate rooms both woken by the same woman after specifically asking reception to not be disturbed. Also the do not disturb sign is on the door. What was the point in me paying the 20 extra.

Also i paid for 2x full works breakfast, when we went into the pub in the morning we ordered 2 full works breakfasts. When we got our food it was the classic breakfast!!! How hard is it to get something right. So I complained only for the lady say she would have to go and check, like I was lying to get an extra sausage. 5 mims later she comes back and says I am right we did order the full works ill get you the extra bits now. So another 5-10 mims go by. We have both eaten our breakfast at this point and we got a plate with the extras on it. What a waste as we didn't want it now we had already finished our breakfast. Absolutely shocking service. The breakfast wasn't very nice either.

Really unhappy with this stay I would definitely avoid this place if...

Good location. Excellent value for money. There is a mc donalds just next to it. Ample free parking. The bar area has separate parking and offer a lot of food options and deals. We didn't have anh as couldn't find a good vegetarian option. Hotel is just across the road from the bar. Separate parking. A receptionist is there but if not, they are in the bar/hotel. Can ring them. Check in process fast. Helpful staff. Very modern and newly built hotel. Secure access throughout with rf id cards. Free wifi(didn't use). Neat and clean.breakfast was amazing. They will bring the full English to you or whatever you choose from the menu. Rest continental breakfast you can enjoy. Great variety of items. They made vegetarian breakfast for us. Ate so much. Had a great start for the day. We stayed here as we wanted to go to alton towers which is 30 mins drive away. I would recommend this as very affordable option. Everything near park is expensive. Definitely will come back.

My first time going to the Blue Jay and will be going back again soon. Wheelchair access is phenomenal as tables are well spaced out, making the whole restaurant light and airy. Between the 3 of us we ordered a vegan vegetable chilli, sirloin steak and chips, and a 4oz gammon steak and chips from the lunch menu. The food was amazing. Ample tortillas with the chilli, which was just the right heat with a good number of jalapenos on. The beef steak was a perfect medium and the gammon was absolutely delicious. Marston has always known how to cater for allergies so well, and every precaution was taken in the preparation. It's also about the friendly no problem attitude when faced with weird allergies like mine that makes the experience so much nicer. Can't wait to go back.
