Never normally do bad reviews as there is plenty of negative in the world, but if I can help you avoid this place, I'd be doing some good for this world. The service was atrocious. The food was diabolical. The atmosphere was depressing. We all had a 3 Course Meal, we hadn't even finished our starters and all our main meals came out and they placed them on the table and walked off.... The meals were lukewarm, we then didn't even see any staff members for around 10 minutes so we just started to eat our meals as it would be just a waste and it's the not the waiters fault that we have our meals early, this would be down to the kitchen and management not having an idea about what a 'starter and a main meal is', I've worked in a kitchen for several years and I know how it works. Then furthermore my friend had a mixed grill and he was eating the gammon and as I found out afterwards from him it was dryer than the Sahara Desert he says, he started choking and he started going purple, and I had to perform the Heineken manoeuvre on him as he was choking for about 15-20 seconds and you guessed it.... Not one single staff member came over to check to see if he was alright or offer him a glass of water, they all just blanked us. After all that we had our dessert and as we were handed our dessert they asked if we'd like to pay.... We hadn't even picked up our spoons yet. All that just left a bad taste in my mouth and I will never ever go there again for anything... not even to use the loo's.

A stop off late afternoon lunch for my daughter and I. We chose the Cross Keys because a lot of ours are closed on Mondays. Anyway. We walked in to a virtually empty pub, and three or four staff stood behind the bar. Not a hello or welcome in sight 🙁. Drinks were ordered at the bar, and we found a menu, and a table. Our order was taken by one of the servers. I asked about rhe mushroom and ale pie as I am veggy. The waitress said she hadn't tried it so couldn't say (why are you not doing menu tasting with your staff!!!!) We both chose the garden vegetable burger. Not a long wait for our food to arrive. The chips were scalding hot, just as they should be. The burger, a processed dry things, to be honest was poor. Not very tasty at all. The vintage Cheddar was also not vintage at all, shame. No check backs or up selling in sight. We were offered pudding though. Not a great visit, and I now remember why it has been so long since our last visit.

I had great expections after reading the reviews, sadly the Cross Keys did not live up to them, the squid starter was chewy and clearly over cooked. I ordered the trio of meats, for a sunday roast. The beef was tough and inedible, the pork was extremely thinly sliced and dry, the crackling was miniscule and soggy, The yorkshire pudding was stodgy and very unappealing. The veggies were just a bit to al dente, almost undercooked. The roast potatoes were tasteless and quite strange tasting. The stuffing was bland. And the gravy was extremely salty. But credit is due when I feed this back to the manager, it was taken on and used as an opportunity to improve. The cost of the uneaten meals were removed from the bill. I will visit again to see if this was a one off bad experience. Photo 4 shows the pork crackling

I don't usually review but this was disappointing. We'd been before for a 'fair' Sunday roast so thought we'd call in for an early Saturday dinner as we passed on the way home. We ordered the steak & ale pie and smothered chicken. When the food was delivered, Korean chicken arrived, a completely different dish. The waiter was not sure what to do but took both plates and said they would return asap with the correct meal. No offer of apology or something while you wait for us to correct our mistake. I went to the empty bar to order drinks. A lovely young lady said she was sorry for my wait, she would serve me but it was her 1st day and wasn't sure how. Eventually, bar staff arrived carrying juice cartons and told me she'd be with me in 2 seconds. She completed the order she was working on and chatted with the lovely 1st day girl asking about homes in a local town and how many bedrooms she needed. Still no service and I was the only one waiting. After a lot(!) of screen tapping, I paid almost £13 for half a cider and a double gin & lemonade. I questionned it as there had been so much tapping on the screen and it seemd expensive but apparently, it was correct.

Quite a wait later, the food arrived. My fiances dish was hot but now stale, pie crust was inedible, mash and veg had dried out. As the food was delivered, we were asked if we wanted sauces I asked for mayo. None came. Eventually as I'd eaten half my meal, I went to the bar and asked again. Bar chap was more helpful and sent for mayo. It came, again with no apology for wait. Chicken was ok, onion rings weren't hot and were clearly undercooked. Straight from a bag of frozen rings. I've eaten in the most basic and the most fancy of restaurants and don't mind paying for good dining but at around £60 all in for 2 people, this sadly wasn't a £60 experience. We...

My family and I visited here to cap off our week's holiday. My young sons (3yrs and 1yrs) and dog loved playing in the beer garden. We ordered on the app, but my husband went to the bar to ensure what we had ordered was suitable for my elder son who has a severe dairy allergy (anaphylaxis). The food arrived, and we did our usual double check with the waitress that the food for him was dairy free. We were met with a surly 'probably' over her shoulder, as she walked away. We called after her, to clarify, stating he had an allergy, and she just yelled back 'yeah I think so'. My husband then went to speak to the manager, who first tried to blame us for ordering food that was not suitable for our son. I was absolutely incredulous when I heard this, as the allergen information was unclear on the app for the side options, hence why my husband went in person to check before we put our order through. Upon checking the rice ingredients, it did in fact have dairy in. If we had allowed our son to eat it, we would've been rushing him to resus at the nearest A&E 10 minutes later when his tongue swelled up, blocking his airway. Eventually the manager half apologised, and refunded his meal. By this time, my son was sobbing, my food had gone cold, and our family meal was ruined. So I asked for my meal to be refunded too. Mistakes can be made, we fully understand that, but we do not expect to be met with such derision and outright surly attitudes by both waiting staff and management when we highlighted their error. So, go if your kids want a good romp around in the beer garden. The food was mediocre, and most of it is microwaved (my son couldn't have the mash potato option as it arrives precooked and frozen, so it's microwaved), and I unfortunately cannot recommend if you have any allergies or...

This is a very well presented Pub, especially for a chain pub. I have visisted it on and off since the 80's (when it felt very much like a good Bernie inn type place) It had a notable refurb in the late 90s when the extension/pool room to the side was opened out and made part of the main pub, and the timbers were painted dark, and the pub was given a more classic feel. This has been retained through the last 25 years or so and gives the place a really nice atmosphere without being a tacky attempt at "old worlde pub" as is sometimes the case with refurbs of pubs of this sort of age. The service was wonderful, the young ladies were really pleasant, warm and polite, didnt waste any time, but at the same time gave us time to look through the menu and catch up with family members we were meeting with. The food is good pub grub, I was really impressed with my cheese burger. There were no pretentions of "gourmet burger" on the menu, but it was a huge juicy burger, clearly hand made out of really good steak mince form the shape , taste and texture. Accompanied by the most delicious fries and onion rings, I might add. All of our meals where really nice, very very good value. My young son felt compelled to tell the waitress that his gammon steak was the best he had ever tasted. I have to say the burger I had was one of, if not the best I have had too. Thank you very much, we will be visiting again. Edit October 2025, visited again, this time with our dog, and we weren't disappointed, as always lovely food, lovely atmosphere, lovely staff and very dog friendly. Booking on the phone is easy with the AI bot, though a little off putting, but please don't let it put you off. The staff here are nothing like the AI bot on the phone. Emily and Sammy were our servers and they...
