Dined out here on a Thursday night. Very quiet at 7pm with only 3 tables occupied but looked to be doing takeaways as well. Staff very pleasant and attentive without hassling us. Food came quickly after ordering and was very tasty. Portion size is quite large and after a large cup of olives and Italian bread (shared with my wife) and chicken liver pate the calzone proved too large for me to finish. Calzone was a bit chewy but sauce very nice. Toilets very clean. Tables reasonably spaced. Music not too loud. With restaurant costs going up massively I thought the prices were reasonable but £6 for a pint of lager seemed a little over the top.
Previous review: New to area and was too late to go to the shops so tried IL Cancello. Google maps had a bit of a problem but got there in good time with perhaps 5 minutes wait. Food very tasty and large portions. A bit pricey as a takeaway but tasty. Check your order before driving home as we were missing an item but that was quickly rectified. Restaurant was about 1/3 full at 7:30pm and it seemed quite nice with people well spaced and staff very attentive. looked like quite a few doggy bags were going home. 3/5 because of price and missing item initially...
Read moreTaken by friends for a celebratory meal. Our first visit. The food can only be described as excellent, I handed fried calamari served in bite size pieces with a delicious dip for starters followed by strips of beef on a bed of roasted Mediterranean vegetables and a Brandy based sauce which was out of this world in fact I would have been quite happy to have just the sauce and some bread to mop it up with. Dessert was simple but delicious, just 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream, a cup of cold espresso and a strawberry. My only disappointment was the noise level, but this is probably down to the acoustics of the restaurant. To sum up, a place I would certainly visit again, car parking is available a short walk away, but public transport...
Read moreCollection Dinner for Two. Ordered Agnello e Cipolla Rossa (lamb, caramelised onion & tomato) pizza and Di Pesci (seafood) Linguini, as we wanted to takeaway to eat in our hotel whilst watching FA Cup. Phoned in order selected from their (clean and concise) website menu, collected to the second 15 mins later. Outstanding pasta, very generous portion and great variety of fresh seafood within. Couple of mega king prawns on top which were cooked to perfection, fried in garlic and finished on flame by the taste - lovely touch. Pizza was great too, strong enough flavours but not overpowering the pasta dish. There’s a very good chef running Il Cancello’s kitchen, evident in every deep, delicious mouthful of their excellent...
