I always enjoy a trip to the King Alfred and today was no exception. Quick, friendly service and a really, really tasty meal which my dog looked at longingly. It was a weekday lunchtime so I didn't have a reservation, but at weekends and evenings I'd definitely book.
They have a one-way system in place and hand sanitisers.
It was an August day and I was in shorts and a sweatshirt. Inside though they are keeping ALL the doors open, which is obviously for hygiene, but isn't a government requirement. It's a typical old English pub, and on the beautiful levels near the water at that, which meant the wind was whistling through the downstairs. If, like me, you expect to be at room temperature whilst you eat, ask for a table upstairs! I noticed that all the locals went straight upstairs and now I know why!
The barman kindly lit the fire for me, which was great. Its effect was slightly dampened however by the two owners, not once, not twice, but at least 3 times each, saying right in front of me that the fire shouldn't have been lit, as it was not cold enough to merit it! Hmmmm. If you work in hospitality, and you have a fire and a not very warm customer... Seems the answer was right there and the barman got it right.
Parking is on site, the fantastic Burrow Mump is round the corner, and the situation is terrific.
I'd recommend this pub, just next time I'll...
Read moreTravelled here to meet family from Exeter for a Christmas meal. Very disappointing food all round. Turkey Christmas roast meal had no veggies other than roast potatoes. We asked for vegetables and were given a good bowl of them but by then the roast dinner was cold No stuffing and had to ask for sauces. Burger was good but fries were cold. Steamed fish on a small bed of vegetables was good but again had to request extra vegetables to make it a decent sized meal. Cauliflower steak was very bland and the kitchen had forgotten about the new potatoes and carrot mash that it was supposed to be served with. By the time they came after we reminded the staff, the cauliflower was cold. They had run out of Christmas pudding. The sticky toffee pudding was nice but weirdly served with grapes and a sponge finger. We ordered fruit with custard but that never came so we cancelled it once everyone had finished eating. Service was cordial but very slow. Perhaps they were short of staff that day? The next table was also really disappointed with their Christmas roast meal and asked us how we had managed to get some vegetables with our roast. Like us, they kept their coats on as it was cold inside. Wish we’d gone somewhere else for our special...
Read moreCame here on recommendation. When first got there was busy but were greeted by Lisa very friendly. I had asked for quiet table due to anxiety and she was helpful, we first tried to sit in a pod outside but was too dark so went in to quiet table. The young waitress bought our drinks to us and very abruptly put them on table not even trying to be friendly but wasn't just us she was like it with other tables in away put us off. The food was nice and hot. Whilst sat finishing our drinks another girl behind bar started stroking a dog and then picked it up and started cuddling it, and then just carried on serving not even washed hands. (I'm a dog lover but eating and drinking establishment got to be hygienic). I found Lisa and the young lad friendly and helpful. This Inn is situated in Burrowbridge beautiful little place with an old ruined church on hill. Burrow Mump which looks worth a visit. This Inn has plenty of seating inside and outside and parking. Personal...
