We visited Mattonis on Thursday lunch time. We were surprised to see it empty. After eating it was not justified as the food was stunning. In fact other parties started to come in when we were leaving. Back to the food. We chose a Caprese Salad Starter, Meatballs and Spaghetti Pasta, the Mattoni Special Pizza and some Tiramisu for dessert. I have to say the food was excellent. All the ingredients were fresh and cooked per order. The Caprese Salad had stunningly creamy Mozzarela cheese balls with fresh salad and tomato. The pizza was cooked to perfection. The base was not like the usual soft and soggy bases you get. This one was authentic dough cooked in an oven where the base crisped slightly. The peppers, mushrooms, pepperoni etc were cooked beautifully and so fresh again. The meatballs were home made, enormous and very tasty with just the right amount of herbs mixed within the meat. The pasta sauce was light, very tomatoey (spelling??) and just the right mount to give the spaghetti pasta that moist feel and taste. Finally the Tiramisu. Wow. It was home made and you could taste that hint of amaretto in the sponge, a lovely soft creamy texture cream finished with a strong espresso coffee. The meals were beautifully plated and presented. The cook, Tina - who is from Napoli, Italy, came out to see whether we enjoyed the meal and spent some time with us chatting about the foods, the fresh ingredients. She emphasised the passion there to create enjoyable foods and I think she is succeeded. Mattonis has some great deals and we had three courses (sharing the started and dessert) with drinks for £45. I hope this review helps you to go to Mattonis to experience the lovely food and atmosphere there, and to support local business in these trying times. Sorry we didn't photograph the meals .. we dived straight in...
Read moreWe have been coming here since it was first opened. However, the last 2/3 visits have left us feeling disappointed. Tonight (9/2/24) is probably our last visit. The staff whilst friendly were clueless as to the menu. Our server did not understand what a Rioja was. We were told that you did not have any so chose another red wine only to be told that a Rioja was found. Not only did the Rioja arrive but also the second choice of wine. So far it was humorous like an episode of Fawlty Towers. I received the incorrect pizza which was returned and was tried to be fixed by removing incorrect topping and adding the correct topping where the new topping was cold. A fresh pizza was then prepared which came with a soggy doughy base and was not particularly warm. My husbands meal was taken back to the kitchen to be remade so we could eat together. His new meal was salty and dry, not at all appealing. To top it off the bill arrived where we were overcharged for a bowl of olives to be told that this was a computer error. We had a reservation booked for a family party in a couple weeks which we have subsequently cancelled because we no longer trust the restaurant. Summary, inexperienced staff whilst friendly and tried their best do not know the menu, food poor and felt diddled...
Read moreVery shocking with the quality of food here. I had high expectations for this place. Food quality was appalling. Ordered scallops. As the menu read, pan seared with double cream, topped with mozzerella then baked in the oven. Served flaming. Served with our freshly baked focaccia of the day.
Scallops came in a pot of cream. Bland cream. Was chewing on a scallop (there was 3 in for £9.95) was a raw texture. Spat it out. Cut open another one to check it wasn’t raw. Was hot to touch. Good sign. Was NOT pan seared. Was NOT topped with mozzerella. was NOT served flaming and my bread never did arrive. (Wasn’t overly busy for them to completely forget the bread) Garlic bread start was good. Can’t fault that. Alfredo for main. Bland as anything. Mushroom just tasted boiled. Ham is ham and tomatoes were halved and hot. Meatballs main was bland. Not seasoning what so ever. Very basic. As a side I ordered French fries. Paid extra for ‘dirty fries’ that’s one word for them. Was the cheapest tasting fries I have ever tasted. Burnt. Bacon was nice.
note I did complain about the scallops and the nice lady did take it off the bill.
note was never offered black pepper...
