We go into the Old Kings Head on a regular basis for food and drink when we are staying in Broughton which is quite regular. We have eaten there several times in the past with not really any issues, however last night 11th June 2021 was a complete different story. We ordered Tomato and Basil soup home made (NOT) More like Heinz with some fresh basil added and stirred in plus a Ham terrine which if I had thrown at the window it would have put it through and they're double glazed. The inside once got into was dry and overcooked. Very, very dreadful however it got even worse. The Prawn Linguini was over cooked Prawns dried beyond belief and the pasta was some undercooked and some overcooked a very special trick if you can do it. The Cumberland sausage and creamed potatoes in a rich onion gravy was a dried out and overcooked defrosted old piece of sausage with warm potatoes and a gravy that would make OXO look good. On complaining as we had both eaten very very little was returned with the waitress coming back from the chef saying (this is the best part) Everything is fresh was the chefs reply and your next drinks will be free. WHAT. I would have expected I'm awfully sorry obviously something was wrong can I cook you something else instead. No nothing like that. So I am truly disappointed A with the food but more swith the chefs non professional response. PLEASE DO NOT EAT THERE UNLESS YOU ARE DESPERATE. Darren the landlord seriously needs to address the...
Read moreWe had intended to stay just 2 nights so as to attend a family funeral. The day we were intending to leave the Snow Bomb hit Cumbria and within hours a sprinkling of snow had turned into inches of snow and our car was not going to go any where.|Lorna, Darren and Jackie were quite unfazed by the new circumstances and readily|booked us in again. As the day wore on and the snow got deeper, people started arriving on foot having had to abandon their cars. Despite the chef not being able to get to Broughton that day Darren did a sterling job of feeding everyone that evening with not much more than the basic ingredients of a full English Breakfast. His Cheese Omelettes were wonderful! By evenings end there more people staying than there were bedrooms so a dining room was repurposed. |The Sunday brought a bit more snow, now over a foot deep, but now the thaw was starting. Snow ploughs and salters were beginning to make headway and now the chef was able to walk into work and that Lunchtime he was able to provide wonderful food for those of still in the hotel. That evening, Haley, the barmaid was able to relieve Lorna of her bar duties and a very convivial evening was spent by all.|In short, this is a great hotel and the people are truly wonderful, it is well worth...
Read moreEntered this establishment with some friends after a weekend of camping. Was greeted by an elderly couple who seemed very friendly, however we did feel a bit rushed as we were ushered like cattle to a table, and told we must order in the next two minutes or we would go hungry. Upon ordering, we were faced with the woman behind the bar, telling us we all looked rough. I understand that we may not be locals of the village, however in the hospitality sector, you should never tell a paying guest that their appearance is not up to standards. The food was nice and arrived quickly, however we were brought two fish sandwiches rather than one, which the waitress then took back to the kitchen. By assumption, this got thrown away, as it would be unacceptable to serve to another guest. They did not check if we had accidentally paid for this twice, we were given the cold shoulder as the waitress angrily waddled away. Why could we not have the other fish sandwich? Nobody ever complains about extra fish. Business clearly only replies to...
