First time visitor... won't be the last time!
I pulled in here - on my way back to Bristol - for a very late breakfast after setting off from Bristol for Cheddar at 7.30 am. I arrived at Ollie's a few minutes after midday. It was a random decision based mainly on the fact that the car park was already 75% full, which I thought was a good sign.
I decided to have 'Ollie's All Day Breakfast', the first choice on the extensive menu: sausage, 2 hash browns, a bacon rasher, baked beans, tomato, fried egg and toast, all for less than a tenner.
Whilst I waited I looked around and saw how popular this place is. The menu is basic (it's a cafe, not a restaurant, after all) but quite varied, with lots of choices for vegetarians and with a kids menu. (It's also dog-friendly... for well-behaved dogs on a lead, but probably not un-muzzled XL Bullies slathering at the customers whilst not on a lead.)
It's very clean, the tables are well-spaced rather than crammed together (so people using walkers have room to manoeuvre) and the staff I met were lovely... very welcoming.
My food took a while to arrive 'cos whilst I waited the place filled almost to capacity... it's that popular.
Was it worth it? Oh wow, yes... wonderfully cooked food... the sausage was thick (and very hot... ouchy, ouchy, ouch), 2 lovely hash browns, a wonderfully thick rasher of lean bacon, baked beans, a halved cooked tomato and a perfectly cooked fried egg, still with a runny yolk... plus 2 slices of toast, with 2 small serving packs of Anchor butter. (I mention this because I didn't see any sign of cheap condiments... for example, the brown sauce was HP, not some brand you've never heard of.) I was too full to even attempt the toast.
I thoroughly enjoyed my meal... well, everything actually.

Read moreA reasonable family diner. Our visit was soured by the attitude of the male server (and the chef - who we never saw) as I asked for the eggs with my breakfast to be scrambled. Their rule is that this is not permitted unless you order scrambled eggs on toast, as it slows the chef and kitchen down. If they did not offer scrambled eggs on the menu, I would find this acceptable (as was the case with several places I have visited). I asked why it would slow the kitchen up if I ordered scrambled eggs with my breakfast but not if I ordered scrambled eggs on toast. This seemed to be the final straw and any remaining cordiality from the male server ended abruptly. I was then marked as a trouble maker and treated with visible hostility. I then proceeded to order all the items I wanted from the Full Breakfast but by adding them (as is allowed and written on the menu) as add on items to my order of scrambled eggs on toast. So rather than having a breakfast, that comes with toast and my eggs scrambled (as opposed to fried), I had scrambled eggs on toast (the eggs weren't on the toast actually, it was on the side cut in triangles with separate butter - as was my friends who had the breakfast with toast) with added bacon, sausage etc.
This seems both incredulous to me and also not worth making your customers feel unfair about to the point you argue with them and then treat them with hostility.
The simplest way would be to have asked me what I actually wanted and then helped me get that from the menu options without all the fuss.
Everything else was fine. The scrambled eggs, ironically, were superb and all the female members of staff were polite and courteous.
Sad that "scrambled egg gate" ruined it visit and...
Read moreAfter reading the reviews on here I was looking forward to trying it. I found it disappointing. On arrival the waitress wasnt very friendly, they dont serve scrambled eggs!! only poached or fried and even at 11am they had ran out of items. The sausages are good quality but they are oven cooked so the skins are like condoms and in a sandwich they come off in strings which is really grim. It turned my stomach. The skins need cooking as well by quick frying or grilled.
The chicken burger is not a burger as in minced chicken coated in batter (like every other cafe and restaurant) it's a whole flattened chicken breast in a tiny brioche bun so be careful if you order for a group of kids who probably wont eat it as they will be expecting a chicken burger. The 1st waitress continued to be grumpy and another sprayed the neighbouring table with disinfectant from a height and it filled the air. I noticed the table next to us was wiped but there was food on the chairs and leftovers on the floor which the next guests complained about. Toilets are modern but the pans and seats aren't clean. Its also overpriced I think so all considered I cant recommend and even though I pass most weeks, wouldn't...
