I'm not one for a drive by but having spent all day in Edinburgh on my feet politely declining a fringe show every 8.4ft I walked I took the plunge and decided to eat in the first pub I saw when back across the border. Now of course I know it isn't- but it's the one I saw and that's justification enough when you're after not having to cook back at base. It was warm enough at 8pm to still sit outside but we took an inside table in the lounge since it seemed nice. Menus shown, drinks ordered service was polite and efficient. I had the parmesan chicken and my partner and daughter had haddock and the burger respectively. We didn't wait long and the food was a decent couple of notches above regular pub fair - clearly a proper home made burger, fish fried just to done and real pancetta (non solo danese sotto mentite spoglie!). I often say that it's hard to do pub food well since people know what to expect (there's no hiding overdone chips, everyone is a steak expert and salad cut last night rarely passes the grade) but the Red Lion got gold stars tonight for doing exactly that - nice meal, good service and a fair price. They say it's the most common pub name in England and given it was King James of Scotland that set that ball rolling I think I made a decent choice tonight after my day in...

After ringing at quite late notice for a table for lunch on New Year's Day we visited the Red Lion having never been to Millfield so we didn't know anything about the pub. I'm so very glad that we did. We've rarely been made to feel so welcome anywhere. There's a good selection of local beers and it was clear the staff knows about each one.

Everyone we spoke to was so warm and friendly, and they were obviously proud of the lovely old pub which is in the heart of the village. The village itself is in the most beautiful and timeless place.

We both had the steak pie and chips which are made in the pub and they were possibly the best pies we've ever eaten. Big chunks of meat, proper suet pastry, chips, peas and gravy. Out girls had breaded fish off the children's menu and when it came it was a big piece of really fresh fish fried in panko breadcrumbs, it was devine.

Our desserts were gorgeous too, a mint Aero cheese cake with loads of chocolate chunks, and a sticky toffee pudding with local Doddington ice cream. Proper pub food made really well and served by people who care. It was just the nicest and most comfortable experience we've had in a very long time. We wanted to stay, we'll...

Upon my first encounter of this dainty little establishment I was surprisingly astonished with the overall atmosphere. The cuisine was mouth-wateringly devine and the service was splendid. The selection of finest local ales and spirit give your taste buds a little trip to heaven and back. The alfresco dining area on a warm summers evening is mesmerising and the feeling of watching the sun setting from the majestic maroon sky matches only to the overwhelming service from the hard working and delightful staff. I vacated the hectic life of the city for a romantic long weekend away with my dearly beloved of 34 years and in our old age we grew to love the ambience and serenity of this fine place we call home. I cannot recommend this establishment enough and I must persuade you to take a few minutes out of your precious day to visit this lovely abode where you will always be welcomed...

I had the pleasure of staying 3 nights this week B&B (and I did evening meals too) Lovely ambience. Very friendly owners, good beer range. Proper beers! I had some great conversations with the locals. The food was lush. The best sticky toffee pudding I ever tried. As good as the original 1983 recipe I have. Sea trout was a real treat and belly pork is always a winner. The pie was a proper thin crust packed with lovely meat.
