We go walking around here a lot, but this is the first time we've eaten here. It's quite literally across the road from one of the entrances to Tockholes & Roddlesworth Woods and one of the start/finish points for walking up to Darwen (Jubilee) Tower. Dogs *ARE* allowed inside which is good as its such a popular dog walking area. Parking is plentiful for the pub and separate parking adjacent for walkers. Inside the pub is clean, cozy and the staff are lovely and helpful. Our food came quickly and was lovely! A very pleasant surprise that the chips were 'real' parboiled, fried chips and not frozen chips 😁 Partner had Gammon, which came with chips, peas and fried egg, I had scampi which came with chips, peas and a lovely tartar sauce. Portion sizes were good (but not over the top), we also had 1 tea & 1 latte and the bill was just over £30 which I thought was good value.

Booked for Sunday lunch and was seated promptly, we ordered roast beef and it came quite quickly, but the roast potatoes were so hard that I physically couldn't get my fork in them for a while, they were really salty when I did manage to. The beef was chewy but tasted ok. The veggies were nice and the gravy was lovely. I do think the Yorkshire pudding was a frozen one which is disappointing. We ordered sticky toffee pudding for afters and waited about 30-40 mins... When it came it was stone cold, we told the waitress who was very nice, she agreed and got us new ones. They were hot but a bit hard. It's a shame because I've been in once before for just drinks and it felt totally different, the staff were really lovely but this time it felt like they were too busy for uly was filled with walkers and people for drinks.

Great pub, warm welcome from all the staff and excellent, homemade food. 4 of us had the coffee and Guinness braised brisket burger, buttermilk chicken burger, veggie burger and a steak baguette with sweet potato fries. All burgers packed with flavour and really delicious. 😋 Generous portions of chips, which is always a bonus. The steak baguette was filled with garlic alioli and gherkins, and the sweet potato fries are yummy. 😋 Dessert was apple and cinnamon crumble with creamy custard. A big, warm hug of a dessert. 🤗 The Bailey's cheesecake actually tasted of it and was both generous and creamy. Oh, and you must finish with a coffee as the homemade cinnamon shortbread that comes with it are divine. They should be sold in bags. 😄 😁 A really lovely afternoon and will definitely be back soon. ❤️ 💙 💜 💖 💗

First of all I'd like to say that we used to come to the Royal very often. Service and food was always top notch. That said..

Since reopening after lockdown we have been back on three occasions. Each one of them the experience was less than acceptable. First time I have ordered scampi and chips, received half frozen, half cooked item. Not good, right? Also no mayo to go with the propa chips..

Second time I came with my nephew. We got a table ordered food okay etc. After some time my nephew received his food but I have not. So I waited about 5 more minutes or so then asked about it. The meal has been forgotten about.

Okay so I give the benefit of the doubt as it is recently been extended, new set up and much busier than previously. Then we came to have some food tonight..

The pub serves food until 6pm. We have arrived at 5.35pm and sat down at the table. No one came to see us. At 5.45 I have gone to speak with a waitress and we have ordered the food. Fish and chips and veggie meal of the day which was the mushroom stroganoff. Couple of minutes after taking our order the waitress had reappeared all apologetic and said that all if the items required to produce our meals had been already tidied up. We had been offered pizza instead.

I do not usually write lengthy review, but I have decided to do so this time. We really like the place and used to come regularly but as it stands right now, we will not bother. One occasion, maybe two I can accept some things happening but to have something not right on every visit is not good enough. I hope this feedback will be constructive and that things will improve. Perhaps it is just me and I'm jinxed:))

All the best...

Place stank of dog as soon as we walked in. Should have walked out then, but went in the back room. Was served by a lovely girl, which is why it’s getting a 2 star instead of a 1! Ordered off the specials board. Steak and ale pie…not available, ok, that’s fine, my friend ordered the chicken and leek instead. I ordered the pulled pork loaded fries. The food came…..I don’t think the ‘chef’ knows what a fry is. The most horrible Chucky chips…a cross between a wedge and a roast potato but dry and tasteless. Hardly any bbq sauce with the pulled pork, and as for fully loaded, it was plastic cheese sauce and topped with a fried egg????? Never seen that before and don’t want to again. My friends pie. Well the filling was dry, there was a gravy famine, bullet peas and soggy pastry. Served with those god awful chips, not even crispy. Had to wait 15 mins at the bar for our bill, we were being ignored because the card machine was down, and no one even acknowledged we were there! I didn’t want to make a fuss because my friend paid for the lunch for my birthday. I would have certainly said something if I were with someone else!! Hence the bad review. Won’t be...

I was in a severe state of food poisoning on my way home to Northampton! driving the car on the M6 I got dizzy and miraculously reached the petrol station! I got out of the car I was drunk !! I had to vomit 4 times in front of the car it didn't help! .I slept in the car for 2 and a half hours I still felt bad I risked my body to continue my journey to Northampton at 125 miles. got home at 1am and from sunday evening i had vomiting and diarrhea until now i'm lying in bed and can't move !! I'm totally weak .that tuna was bad or someone touched the cola bacteria! I should hold it criminally...
