Beutiful buildings and surroundings were the highlight. We were warmly welcomed and politely seated. This good start was then sadly dropped by informing us there was now only one vegitarian main meal available...yes the dreaded risotto! Really, that's the only option the chef could provide for vegetarian meals. Unbelievable. The most common and therefore boring meal vegetarians get offered at every restaurant around the world. Moving on, our group ordered starters from a good selection. Main courses, including the roast beef sunday option and duck. These were good but nothing special. The vegetable sides being very ordinary and lacking any garnish. The deserts, usualy thd highlight of a mesl for me, was a selection of pub desserts. Surely, this is where the meal should delight. But sadly no, sticky toffee pudding, creme brule etc are hardly going to inspire the sweet toothed eating out on a special to return for a delight. I cannot quite fathom why a menu at such a grand place would be so boringly ordinary in most of the menu options. We had a beautiful evening in great surroundings. The hotel is gradually being refurbished and when finished will match the quality of the food.
Our only feedback for our tasting menu was our main course of lamb. We felt it either needed to be bigger or presented on a smaller plate. Unfortunately it was a little lost in a sea of porcelain!
Overall a lovely evening and we hope the new head chef brings success...
