Had a fantastic stay at the eagle and child. Really great value and in a good location for exploring the south east corner of the lakes. Located about halfway between Kendal and Windemere. Top marks to the very friendly and hard working staff. The pub itself gives off that traditional village pub vibe while being equally as welcoming to visitors and guests. Super cosy inside and the rooms are just great for pub accommodation. Bag a seat by the real fire if you can. A nice selection of Real ales rotate alongside a few keg craft beers. Perfect to get toasty with by the fire or enjoy alongside one of the cracking meals. The fish and chips are fantastic. Even the small portion was generous, the batter was light and nicely seasoned. Breakfast is equally as satisfying with a nice selection laid out for all diets and with produce and meat coming from not far away, including the village butcher! If you are thinking of using public transport to travel to Kendal or Windemere i recommend taking the train. The station is close to the pub, the service is more regular, quicker and cheaper than the buses.

We stopped here on our way home from a weekend walking in the lakes and it was just a short detour from the main route. The setting is beautiful and there seemed to be plenty of parking on the roads as well as in designated spaces directly opposite. The pub itself is lovely, warm and welcoming, with lots of interesting historical and quirky artefacts on furniture and hanging from the ceiling. There was a lovely open fire roaring in the fireplace. The staff were very friendly, the bar had a range of good ales on offer and there was a friendly atmosphere. My friends chose the lamb stew which they were happy with. I had the sirloin steak, which was well done, although I had ordered it cooked medium & the chips were overdone. The dinner was tasty though and I cleared the plate (as usual 😁). I would go back and give them another try the next time I'm in the area.

This Inn was an unexpected find. Situated just at the gateway to the Southern Lakes, in the heart of the small village Staveley, it offers a fantastic, great value accommodation. It's perfect for someone wanting to explore the area and offers beautiful hiking opportunities just at the doorstep. Rooms a cozy, tastefully/ beautifully decorated and well equipped to give a much needed comfort after all day in the mountains. Hotels pub offers great variety of drinks, lovely and inviting atmosphere, cozy fire to warm up after long day of exploring. Restaurant serves delicious, hearty food, could easily rate the best pub food so far. Local lamb, fish pie and bread pudding were absolutely perfect. Breakfast also was perfect. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend this Inn and can't wait to come back myself.

Can anyone honestly look at this photo and say it's worth £15.50? 2 tiny portions of chicken (was supposed to be "fresh breasts"), 6 slices of chorizo and dare I say frozen chips, i can't believe it was frozen chips or at least packet chips, laughable!

My son had the bacon chops and it was quite literally 2 chops with frozen chips, no side salad or anything.

My wife had the beetroot burger which she said was "ok" but yet again, here we go.... frozen chips.

For a village pub I was rather disappointed. This could be such a nice venue but it simply isn't.

Our bill came to £65, my goodness! The local chippy would've cost £20 and they would've been proper chips and fresh fish!

Perhaps I should've complained but where does that get you nowadays.

Lesson learned and hopefully someone will read this and decide to eat elsewhere, whilst saving themselves a hefty bill for rubbish food.

On the plus side the bar staff were really nice, on a negative side a waiter accidently stood on our dog who was out of the way under our table, accidents happen but he didn't stop to check if our dog was OK or anything, or didn't come back after to check, I was very angry so we paid the bill and left and my wife was in tears, she thought he had been really hurt, the yelp he let...

We were travelling home from a camping trip in the lakes when we thought we would stop off for lunch. Thats where the excitement stops unfortunately. We ordered 3 children's meals and 2 adults, with 5 drinks costing just short of £60. For a pub lunch I would expect a whole lot more, not just the size of the portions but maybe a little more effort than frozen food. The chips were from a packet along with the kids chicken goujons. The children chicken curry was not to be desired for a 9 year old, nothing to do with spice but more the choice of vegetables. Then there was the gammon which didn't look the freshest, very thin and also dry, the best part of my wife's meal was the fried eggs. I ordered haddock and chips, which should of been advertised as "a piece of fish no bigger than the smallest gold fish in your tank at home", not only was the haddock extremely small and laid in a bed of oil, they served it with no more than 10 chips on my plate, the best part of my meal being the tartar sauce. Then last of all, the 3 Pepsi drinks were flat and the cans of Fanta and Dr pepper were not refrigerated and...
