EDIT: the owners response to mine and others reviews demonstrate her attitude toward customer service perfectly. All her responses have an excuse or are dismissive. Hopefully she'll go out of business soon, such a disgrace.
Avoid this place at all costs, absolutely awful. Looking at reviews from others who had a poor experience, it is very clear that the owner can't take feedback or criticism which is clear with previous poor reviews.
We booked the garden room having stayed in others before. We expected the same quality of the indoor rooms to be reflected in the cabin however, it was so filthy. Dirty, dated, and they have built it so that the outside comes in, spiders, flies, beetle type things...in the room. I was up until gone 2am as I couldn't sleep. I've attached photos of the cabin as the staff "couldn't see anything wrong on checking it."
I should note that the evening was lovely, the food was good and staff friendly. At midnight I emailed the owner to say we'd be checking out because of the reasons noted above and her response was dismissive. Having stayed in 100s of different accommodation types over the years I can honestly say that we took it with a grain of salt and booked somewhere much nicer to move to the following day.
In the morning we had breakfast which was decent, but we were treated coldly as I watched others tables get asked how they were doing, etc, we didn't get this service and I personally, could sense we were being treated differently.
On going to pay the bill, the owner became combative, rude, purporting that our concerns and dissatisfaction were unfounded. She rolled her eyes at me at one point and I'd had enough so went to the bathroom. On return there was a receipt given to my husband for the entirety of our stay - almost £300. This exemplifies the management and establishment perfectly - as the customer, their interest from the start should have been to look after us. Instead the owner was rude and obnoxious.
We refused to pay for nights we weren't staying and she kept repeating that "we decided to leave", we'll no we did not, the place is appalling. I didn't say much but she kept dismissing us with her rude, combative approach and demeanor and I had to walk outside as it was like we were being attacked. She followed us outside and started raising her voice (in front of other customers) before I told her to stop speaking over us. (This genuinely happened if you can believe the audacity and lack of professionalism.)
We ended up paying for an additional night to get out of there and away from the owner. Any proper establishment would have reimbursed us or at least saught to make things better. She didn't. That should tell any future customers a lot. We checked into our new accommodation and I'm so happy we did as we enjoyed the rest of our trip!
If you can avoid this place, DO. There are far better places available in this beautiful part of Yorkshire, where you are valued as a customer as well. A disappointing experience at an...
Read moreTo be honest we was really excited to visit here for a nice Sunday dinner and invited our family who live down in South yorkshire to come and see the beautiful area we now live and see why we adore this area so much, since we had never been to the Fauconberg before it would have been new to us all, after reading the reviews of it being a friendly, welcoming place for all etc etc.
We reserved a table for 5 adults and one small child and table was already setup nicely, but upon walking in the atmosphere was unwelcoming indeed and not just to me but my whole family had the same opinion, it had the aura that we was due to have a standing ovation for royalty to walk in or something, was really strange, the young lady on the front desk either really hates her job or something as she was singlehandedly the worst approachable person I think I've ever met in my 39 years of existence, such a miserable cold way to greet a customer indeed, as the food came out pretty quickly mind, the portions was small but was assured the veg etc would follow and when it did we had to pause for a second, there was 5 adults sharing an extremely small amount of veg between us all, we had 1 small bowl of carrots, 1 small bowl of broccoli, 1 small bowl of cabbage and that's it, the lady who did bring the food though (maybe in her late 40's early 50's was very friendly but the servings was seriously small for 5 of us.
What made it worse was myself and my brother who had only just got to the table, was spoken about by some miserable old woman behind that we had our hats on, its bloomin cold outside and we had only just walked in and hadn't even sat down, that was it for me the whole place seems to be friendly to locals but outsiders are frowned upon, I mean it's OK to have big dogs sprawled all over the floor but heaven forbid someone should walk in with a hat on, not the best place I've been in that's for sure.
£15 for half a portion of meal, with what appears to be beef slices from morrisons and the veg left the building before we got chance to see it, staff don't want you there since they don't want to be either amd as for decoration lmao the "quiet room" (snobbery central) needs that stained ceiling seeing to whilst your at it.
The best part of this place was the cat sat on reception and in second place was the exit.
Would not recommend at all, certainly would not return and I don't think they would want me to either, I would have said something but I'm quite loud and brutally honest and I think the biddies in this place would have died...
Read moreFood Review Only! We didn't stay at the pub we just ate there (Now updated to include a stay, read on). What a lovely pub in a beautiful picturesque village! We were picking up some cider from a nearby cider mill in Husthwaite and wanted a good pub lunch to have while we were at it. After some research I chose this place and boy we didn't regret it. The food was amazing and so we're both the service and environment. Lovely old country pub feel to it. The food took a little while to arrive but not too long. Enough time to enjoy a chat and some of our first drink in the lovely old, cosy and warm (they recently had the fire going) interior. I had the outstanding, perfectly cooked burger pictured below and the Mrs had the fish goujon sandwich. Both were amazing went down a treat! They have a fully stocked bar with a good selection of beers, ales and wine manned by friendly, welcoming staff and that includes the servers too. It was a sunny day and the outside seating areas at the front and back are beautiful. Definitely going back and even if it's just to go there with a 40 min journey! Bravo The Fauconberg!
Update: 21/04/25
We have just got back from an absolutely fantastic 2 night stay here. We were in the Thixendale room, which was beautiful, as part of an Easter weekend deal they were running. Got there on the Saturday and received the usual very warm and friendly welcome. Sat outside in the beer garden in the sunshine with some drinks and enjoyed the scenery. That evening I had an outstanding 17oz T-Bone steak cooked to perfection and the good lady had an amazing cheese and veggie bake. On the Sunday we enjoyed a trip to nearby Helmsley (I highly recommend a visit there) and got back for the included (in our package) mind-blowingly good Sunday roast! One of the best weekend stays we've had, especially when you include the smashing breakfasts you get in the morning too. All round a brilliant stay and we can't wait to do it again! Thank you so much Annelies and your team.
Fabulous food (couple of extra pics uploaded), fantastic wine, great beer and lovely accommodation in a beautiful setting.
So what are you waiting for? Go and visit them!
