Upon entry, it was really busy, we were directed by a young waitress to go into the bar area as there were "lots already waiting" for a table in the dog friendly area. So we went into the bar. Where the (I think) owner very rudely hand waved us away (he was clearly flustered as it was very busy) to go into the dog friendly table area (the shed). And then bustled on past us. Thankfully an older waitress had cleared some tables then and it turned out there were plenty in there for us to sit at. There is no clear signage for which bit you can go in with dogs, at the entrance, and nobody organising who goes where really.

Anyway, eventually we were situated and then you find there's an order point in the shed, like a little hatch, not really signposted, we only found out after going into the bar again, to be told to order in the hatch.....

So finally we got some food and drinks ordered, which came out in due course, nachos for one were really nice, and a big portion. All the starters were decent.

The mains however were not so good. Large gammon was millimeters thicker than thickly sliced bacon, and was overcooked underneath, egg wasn't runny. Steak pie was dry and very tough pastry, can only have been reheated, as this is exactly what happens to pastry when reheated. It looked nice, but the proof is in the eating and this was badly lacking.

In no mood to complain to an owner who had been so rude when we entered we just left it after eating what we could, good job the nachos were nice eh?

Their catchment is why they are busy (holiday lets and campers (like us)), and I guess the carvery might be nice but we won't be back to try it, I'd recommend you go here if you like watching live sport and enjoy gruff rude service from bossman and rock hard pastry. Otherwise travel somewhere else to eat.

EDIT This was Sunday 7th May (checking my google timeline) at 5.30pm so if it wasn't you, then it was somone impersonating a poor front of house manager.

Also, the food was as described, and it was still busy when we left so you can imagine why we didn't try and find you, and your responses to anything mildly negative on here speak for themselves. I leave honest reviews so that people can judge for themselves, nothing more. I hope you can find a way to manage the super amount of visits you're generating to your venue with more care as...

Completely agree with the previous review by Morgan Lawrie. We arrived at approx 4.10 and asked for a dog friendly table which we duly got. After ten minutes I decided to go to the bar for drinks and asked if I needed to order Sunday carvery food there. The barman said a member of staff would take our order at the table. We waited, several people who arrived after us were served, we were not even bought cutlery. After another half an our we had finished our drinks and still no one came to us, so decided to call it a day. On the way out I told the woman who had given us the table that we didn't really want to eat anyway. "Oh OK" was the reply. No apology whatsoever. Oh and the atmosphere reminded me of a school canteen. Avoid this place would be my recommendation.

Edit: Following the owner's delightful and customer caring response, your staff were not that busy as by 4.30pm the lunchtime rush was over. The woman who seemed to be in charge of the waiting staff must have known we were there as she sat us there, and in any case a customer should not have to chase round looking for someone to take the order. Furthermore I'm not one to complain, check out my other reviews and you will see that I often give 5* when it's warranted. But thank you for your swift if slightly confused reply, I haven't laughed so much since the days of...

Will not return!! Fine if your locals!! 2 men stood in the dog friendly eating area, smoking, filling it with smoke whilst laughing and joking with the lady at the front. The staff are rude and the wait for food was unacceptable. Only dog friendly if its warm!!!

My response to your reply. I am a nurse working for NHS so I know all about staff shortages but I don't let it effect my work. As for the waiting time it was an hour between each course which IS unacceptable. My review was soft compared to my real thoughts, as believe it or not I am a compassionate person. We moved to a vaccated table that had a heater as the kids were cold because we had been sat at a table without one for over 2 hours having got there at around half 5 and it being nearly 8 before our mains came. I know it was nearly 8 as the staff spoke about not letting anybody else in for food as the kitchen closed at 8. When it came to pay the bill it had been messed up with somebody else's and we were told it was our fault for moving!! Nobody ever apologised to us, so sorry for the bad review but I dont want other holiday makers making the same mistake we did. Potential customers can make their own minds up in regards to rudeness based upon your response to my criticism, which you have repeated to other customers who don't leave you a...

A bit of a spur of the moment decision. We decided to call the Martonian and go for an early Christmas Dinner. I feel a bit mean only giving 4 stars for everything as the Martonian is a very good pub and restaurant. Just my personal opinion, of course, but there is room for improvement in a few areas. The rooms at the Martonian are large, well lit, and there are 2 dog friendly areas. The food was ordered at the bar and the staff were friendly. The Christmas menu offered a dinner for £12.95, a festive burger with lots of extras for £13.95 or loaded roasties (which sounded delicious!) It arrived in good time, piping hot, and was really good! The Christmas dinner was excellent. Just a little comment: I do like cranberry sauce with turkey. The waitress seemed unconfident when asking about the cheese on the festive burger. She was perhaps new to the job? Deserts were not on the menu, which was odd. No Christmas pudding either? I went for chocolate fudge cake in a sea of custard. Good job, I love custard! A step up from your usual pub grub, for sure. I would definitely go again. For 4 people, with drinks, it came to £92.50 (December 2024)

Been trying to get in here for number of years, always very busy. There was plenty of room in the large wooden shed area at the front, we were told by man, either manager or owner that he couldn't let us in there as it was for people with dogs and couldn't make exception for us, we were told to wait on the bench in the doorway. People were walking in after us and when people had finished sat down before us. Not a good system, names should be took on a waiting list then called out when room available. Having said that when we got our meals they were very nice and tasty and a decent portion, also the staff were friendly and approachable. Our grandsons had a pudding which they liked although not as much chocolate sauce in the melt in the middle choc pudding as was expected. When we were leaving there was plenty of people in eating area at front that had no dogs, they told us they go in all the time, don't ask, just go in and sit which is what will do in the future. Would recomend the food here and call next time we are in area
