Spent an absolutely fantastic weekend here! Beautiful and homely accommodation, suitable for the avid walker needing a relaxing base, a couple looking for a weekend away, or a family in need of a short break, this wonderful place can cater for all! The rooms are extremely well thought out and one can clearly see the owners have put their heart in to making them a wonderful place to relax in, including a suitably stocked basket of amenities. Breakfast is served in the restaurant area, and again, is a well stocked table of bread, jams, yoghurts, cereal and more. This is alongside the breakfast you have already ordered the night before! Oh, the fresh milk from the dairy farm right nextdoor is a very tasty touch! The bar... A lovely country pub feel to it, which is great to be able deeply exhale, relax and savour the taste of the many varieties of beverages they have on offer. All the different gins, lovely! A pint and chat with a few locals increased my knowledge in farming seasons too! Now, dinner in the restaurant...where to start?! Amazing!!!! Wow!! The food is tremendous! So much flavour, you're salivating for hours after licking the plates clean! Between my wife and I, we ate 4 different meals over the weekend from the menu. I'm not one for sharing my food, but I had to give in and allow my wife to try mine so I could sample hers. Well worth the sacrifice! The staff throughout our stay were incredibly friendly and accommodating to our needs, even during the busy periods. Not once did we feel we were forgotten. Although all staff were amazing, I have to give an appreciative acknowledgement to Chloe, really went above and beyond, and not just for us. We had the greatest pleasure of meeting the owners, not just in passing, but to actually have a thorough chat with. Emma and James, who is the head chef, are wonderfully accommodating people! I cannot fault this place at all. All boxes were ticked, everything was catered for. We are very much looking forward to our return visit very soon, which we have already booked, and have recommended to all our friends and family. I feel we'll be up there many times this year! Ideally located for motorway access, but far enough away for the lakes to absorb you. As well as being situated close to the main walking areas, Caldbeck itself has some beautiful local walks through and around the lovely village which is steeped with local history, well worth a stay, or just a passing visit for a...

We phoned ahead to check they did Sunday lunch & booked table. We were not told it was a Carvery. On arriving we were a little confused when the waitress explained to help ourselves as we couldn’t see the actual Carvery area. The paper menu was stained and fingered. We did notice things like big wine glasses with a little ā€œtrifleā€ plopped into it and other such pudding attempts all randomly and openly placed with bits of cheese. It was rather funny later when a little boy went up to the pudding / cheese ate and had fun picking off bits of this and that to try!! He loved licking his fingers. Thankfully we didn’t have deserts!! There was a table also for starters - dried up pate, limp salad etc did not look good. |We were given a plate and when we got to the area we were directed we were absolutely confused. The roasts (!) were covered in foil and tea towels, and there were lided big silver dishes. I so wish we had walked away! Everything we got - akin to left overs - was cold, tasteless poorly cooked. Veg was a mixed up mess with random peas & other veg dotted here & there.|The ā€œchefā€ eventually arrived and carved the dried up offerings while offering a single cold Yorkshire pudding from the seating behind. There were three of us and so he joked how many he had made but there was only one left. Not funny - and not tasty ... cold & another item we did not enjoy. No one came near to check if we enjoyed the meal and the chef, clearly happy with his Fayre, cavorted with friends whilst ignoring the fact that his so called Carvery was getting colder and less palatable / safe for any future diners of the day. Lamb disgusting, beef like leather and the pork - the slice we had between the three of us was passable. |On going to the bar to pay - we were overcharged and the waitress laughed - not funny! |We left a large amount of the food - no-one asked how our meal was, we were over charged and it’s the worst Sunday lunch we have ever had. |Mr Chef can frolic as much as he wishes however cooking a load of ā€œstuffā€ on a Sunday and lying it out on tables and seats without adequate heating does not constitute an appealing or healthy meal. |We...

What a wonderful country pub this is - my first visit here with 2 dogs (1 a very young pup) but it will definitely not be my last. I ordered a hot sesame chicken sandwich with sweet chilli sauce, black coffee, bottle of sparkling water, 2 pork rind chews for the dogs, and a bowl of water to the dogs. All that for £27 and in a lovely cosy seat with 2 very happy dogs. I was expecting usual standard pub grub but what arrived turned out to be the best hot chicken sandwich - ciabatta bun - i have ever tasted. After a lifetime of so so experiences, I was ecstatic! The sandwich arrived with some fancy crisps and a lovely bowl of salad. There was also salad in the roll. The crispy coating stayed crisp and the chicken was hot. Very obviously freshly cooked to order. Cosmically delicious! Meanwhile, the dogs were very happy with their chews so I could get on with eating my lunch in peace. I took the chews with me - they lasted hours! Sadly, my youngest pup peed on the floor. This wasn't a problem for them and a lass appeared from behind the bar with spray & paper - she was very sweet about it and both the doggies fell in love with her immediately. I don't suppose it mattered to them that she was also beautiful. - they recognise a good spirit tho! I could have happily stayed there for hours - it has a great atmosphere, great service and is worth every penny.

Food was fantastic, but the service was out of this world. The landlady made us feel welcome in the new "Covid safe" environment, yet with very little impact on our visit. The service was quick, especially taking into consideration how busy it was, yet the staff and the landlady were attentive and accommodating to our requests (even if some things we chose for the kiddies were not on the menu as we wanted to mix and match to keep all the little ones happy). Once seated at our table, we were given the menus and were asked what we would like to drink. The drinks were served promptly, where our food order was then taken. Food was delivered soon after, all hot, fresh and plentiful. I think that if we had ordered starters, I am sure I would have struggled to eat my main course because the portion sizes were wonderfully generous. I upgraded my order to "green" fries, which were French fries, but also covered in home made pesto sauce, which was really great. My scampi was really tasty, and I had to stop my partner from stealing them off my plate. The only downside that I can think of, is that the pub is 310 miles from home, so we won't be coming back anytime soon, but would DEFINITELY recommend, and I say again my thanks to the Whitesmith family for making us feel so welcome.

Lovely historical pub, took my visiting friend for dinner after a little walk up the Cumbria way to clear our heads Saturday gone ....always a nice little pitstop after a walk I had the fish and chips he had the burger , great portions when they came...we did have a wait for them I've gotta say and as someone said the batter on the fish was inconsistent, nice and crispy in places then thick in others it was stodgy soft probably not cooked through the batter.. It wasn't cheap had it been I probably wouldn't have mentioned it tbf but when things are these pricey as they are now they need to be virtually spot on I think. The fish itself was lovely though, the 2 young girls on the bar were lovely and attentive. The pub as always has lovely charm in a stunning location , will be back with family the main dining are for evenings is a stunning room..Thank you all.
