“A Hidden Gem in Berkshire’s Countryside”

I recently had the pleasure of visitig The Old Hatchet, and it exceeded all my expectations. This charming 16th-century pub, nestled between Ascot and Windsor, is a true delight.

Warm Atmosphere: As soon as you step inside, you’re enveloped in a cozy, welcoming ambiance. The crackling fireplaces and rustic wooden beams create the perfect setting for a memorable dining experience.

Historic Charm: The Old Hatchet’s history is palpable. Originally a set of woodmen’s cottages, it has retained its character over the centuries. You can almost feel the echoes of past conversations and laughter.

Gluten-Free and Vegetarian Options: Kudos to the kitchen team! They cater to dietary needs with finesse. Whether you’re gluten-free or vegetarian, you’ll find delicious options on the menu.

Friendly Staff: The staff members are attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. They make you feel like a cherished guest, adding to the overall warmth of the place.

Reasonably Priced: Despite its historical significance and culinary excellence, The Old Hatchet remains reasonably priced. You get exceptional value for your money.

Don’t miss the enchanting Plaza Mayor, the two-tiered Aqueduct of Segovia (a Roman marvel), and the awe-inspiring Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.

Whether you’re seeking a hearty meal, a cozy drink by the fire, or a taste of history, The Old Hatchet is an absolute must-visit. I’ll be returning...

Came across this lovely jewel of a pub on a day out in the area and actually contemplated returning the following day it was so good. The pub is situated in Cranbourne between Windsor and Ascot and has a large car park. It has low beamed ceilings and open fireplaces which on the day of our visit were roaring invitingly. The service was impeccable from start to finish, drinks ordered and delivered immediately. The staff were attentive and available despite the pub being reassuringly busy as we placed our order. The menu is extensive with plenty for all tastes. I can honestly say the food was beyond good and far better than I have had at some higher end restaurants in the area. My wife accidentally spilled her drink at one point and the team jumped in to deal with it discreetly and replaced the drink free of charge. The cost for 2 courses plus drinks and coffee for 2 people was £70 in a warm comforting environment, served by well trained attentive staff was money well spent and in a period of gloomy economic outlook an investment in total pleasure. There was even a fantastic playlist of music at perfect volume as to be audible but not overbearing. The team at the old Hatchet deserve to be congratulated for impressive hospitality, top class unpretentious cuisine in a clean welcoming , comforting environment. Faultless! We will be back and will be bringing family and friends. This place should not...

Lovely old pub, excellent food and service. Very pleasant staff, had a great time. Many thanks. Grandson said its was the best burger he had had ( and he's American)

Updated 2025

This time absolutely terrible. Food was excellent, service was terrible. New server who got the order wrong several times. We all order the beef and ale pie which was the special for the day. She came back to tell us that they only had 5 pies available. Absolutely ridiculous. We waited for over and hour and a half. When we complain the older server ( who should know better) was really rude, no apology. Came with the final bill which was wrong, added several things that we didn't order. Added a service fee. We asked them to bring a revised bill. No apology. Paid and left. My daughter spoke to the manager who didn't apologize or came to speak to us. Terrible. We had just come from burying my mother and this is the service...

The pub has been under new management for a few months now and they are doing a good job. The staff are friendly, the beer is good and the food is lovely. What more could we ask for. Oh yes, Bella the lab wanders around checking that everyone is okay :-) March 10th update: The Old Hatchet is under new management again. Unfortunately this means Bella no longer patrols the garden. Dogs are still allowed though and all seem to be friendly and well behaved. The atmosphere is still very cozy and friendly and the staff are very good. The menu is now different as you would expect. A nice selection though. They have a little way to go to match the previous management, but they seem to be getting there.

I went here for lunch on Monday and it's my first visit although my friend goes here a lot. It's a lovely old building, with beams loads of character. The service was amazing, the guy who served us was friendly and nothing was too much to ask for. The food was amazing and of a high quality, I had the pork belly which was perfectly cooked, followed by a white peach creme brulee. My friends had the fish and chips, I couldn't get over the size of the fish! All wonderfully tasty and well presented. I really enjoyed my visit and hope to go again soon.
