The Olde Victoria, Burton Latimer: Roasts, Ales & Cosy Vibes Done Right đ˝ď¸đşđĽ
If youâre looking for the kind of pub that ticks every traditional box and then surprises you with food so good it makes you involuntarily sigh mid-bite, let us point you toward The Olde Victoria in Burton Latimerâwhere Sunday lunch is a spiritual experience and the bar is always stacked with crowd-pleasers.
The Setting: Classic English Charm with a Side of Warm Welcome
The Olde Victoria is everything a proper country pub should be. Wood beams, open fires, low ceilings (watch your head, tall people), and an atmosphere that says, âRelax. Youâre in good hands.â Whether youâre there for a pint, a quiet meal, or a family knees-up, this place feels like homeâjust with better gravy.
The Food: Comforting, Classy and Absolutely Delicious
Letâs talk roasts, because theyâre the headline act. Plates piled high with tender meats, golden roasties, Yorkshire puds the size of your head, and veg that actually tastes like it belongs on the plate. And the gravy? Rich, deep, and ladled with zero judgement.
But itâs not just about Sundays. Throughout the week the menu offers thoughtful pub classicsâfrom burgers and steaks to lighter bites and hearty vegetarian options. Everythingâs beautifully presented without being poncy, and it all tastes freshly cooked with care.
The Drinks: Ales, Wines & Plenty to Toast With
The bar is well stocked and well run, with local ales, a good wine list, and a G&T that arrives properly poured (no stingy measures here). Whether youâre a craft beer geek or just want a cold pint and a smile, youâre in the right place.
The Service: Friendly, Efficient, and Unflappably Cheerful
The staff at The Olde Victoria strike that perfect balance of attentive but relaxed. They know their stuff, theyâre happy to chat, and they make you feel looked after without hovering like helicopter waiters.
The Verdict: A Burton Latimer Favourite Thatâs Worth a Detour âââââ
The Olde Victoria isnât trying to reinvent the wheelâitâs just doing everything right. Great food, welcoming surroundings, and the kind of local pub atmosphere thatâs getting rarer by the day.
Five starsâplus a bonus Yorkshire pudding just for being consistently brilliant. Book ahead, turn up hungry, and prepare to leave...
Read moreVisited for Sunday Lunch on 26th May. We did book the week previously, and glad we did as i dont think we would have got a table. Parking is plentiful if you have an earlier booking, but can be busy later on and you may have to park away from pub and short walk in. Plenty of seating outside, especially if weather is warm. I had a pint of San Miguel and my wife had a Malibu and coke, which was £9.20. We were seated at our allotted time and the restaurant was busy but tables not too close and they cater for larger parties. There is a 2 or course option for Sunday lunch, we opted for the 2 courses for £25. I had the topside roast beef and my wife had the chicken. There is an option for Lamb shoulder (i will be having next visit). We were served quickly and the staff are very attentive and friendly. My roast beef was delicious as were the roast potatoes, Yorkshire, the roast parsnips and carrots, were also yummy. The veg came out seperate with peas, beans , leeks and cabbage, all of which were very fresh and cooked to perfection, we asked for extra veg and extra gravy. I think you get a better deal with the Chicken option as you get pigs in blankets and stuffing, which you dont get on the beef?? Anyway, my wife said it was the best roast she has had in more than a decade (high praise indeed). I have to agree, the meal was delicious and the portion generous as i could not finish my beef. We could not fault a thing on the plate, so compliments to the kitchen staff. For desert we had Sticky toffee pudding, i had custard and my wife had extra sauce and butterscotch ice cream. It was light yet scrumptious, and we were both full to bursting. The toilets were lovely and clean and probably the best toilets i have visited in a pub/restaurant for along time. Overall, value for money and the food superb. The service excellent, especially Tim the manager, a lovely kind man. By the way for all 3 courses it is £32. We will be back in the next couple of weeks as this was the best Sunday lunch for...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I were delighted to discover this pub as it welcomed dogs in one of the bars. We had made a long journey from south Wales and we were hungry.
Whilst the pub welcomes dogs, it appears to be less welcoming to dog's owners. I'm not asking for staff to dance a foxtrot when we order our food and drinks, but a smile would be nice. We also ordered food, and when that arrived it was just dumped on the table in front of us, the waitress turning heel and walking away again without so much as a smile. Again. Indeed, when the salad arrived, that was casually tossed (see what I did there?) onto the table mid-pirouet.
The food itself was adequate, but only just. My "hand-battered" cod may well have been hand-battered in a factory in Grimsby at some point in the past, but it wasn't fresh (which the menu description inferred), it was frozen. Which rather defeats the object. And it was seriously overcooked, as were the chips. And both had been cooked in oil that I suspect had come from the sump of a Transit van, rather than clean cooking oil.
My girlfriend's risotto was better, but not by far. We suspect that too was cooked from frozen, as bizarre as that sounds.
Whilst not extortionate, the prices are certainly higher than for standard bar fayre, and the meals and service here struggled to achieve even that...
